Hi folks.. My question is two fold here..
Fist off.. I was wondering if anyone knows how long a drive should last approximatly?..In buring hours or whatever. Considering I have burned over 300 DVD's Plus various test DVD's system backups and so on I figure I have close to 400 Burning hours on my Writer. I was wondering if I should expect my drive to go bad soon.

Secondly...As I mentioned I have thr DRU-500AX. I have read on here that alot of people dont like the Sony's. I personally have had tremendous luck with mine. However..Sony,s New Drive is the 510A and I cant find the 500AX at the stores anymore. Im not so sure about the new one.. I have been reading thats it kinda twitchy. Now does anyone know if this is the same as the 500AX upgraded or if it is completely different?..If my burner does go out Im trying to decide which I should go with Next...I,ve seen the I/O magic and the TDK's pretty cheap but I,ve been very satisfied with the Sony so if the 510A is basically the same as the 500AX I would rather go with that one...
Thanks in advance!

Get the pioneer 106. Since multiformat blows you might as well get the one that has more luck doing dvd-rs (as they're cheaper).

You can actually burn at 4x with g04s with the dru500ax?

My dru500ax works fine as well, except for a frustrating bout with crappy Nero. Most of my stuff is done on the pioneer 105 now though as it can burn g04s at 4x instead of 2x. Never had a bad burn with the Pioneer and record now max.

Thanks for the input Tosca. I have been looking around all on the web and its a toss up between the Sony and the Pioneer A06. Since both are dual format which is what I need I may just come down to price...
As for burning 4x with my Sony...The only ones I have really tried were Verbatim +R (burned a 30 pack at 4x with no problems)
AS for Ebay..yeah..you have to be careful there...I have a couple of sellers that I usually buy from and have no problems with the Disks..But I saw these 4x -R's pretty cheap so I figured I would try them..When I got them I checked the header and it said "Longten" which I have never heard of..So I tried burning 2 of them..both started out at 4x the quickly dropped to 1x. It aggrevated me and thats why I decieded to try the Riteks..The ones im getting are the 2x -R's so hopefully they will work fine..thanks Again!

Oh..and P.S. If you have problems burning Certified 4X media and the Sony. They recommend getting an 80 wire IDE cable. I have a Dell and thats what it came with and it works GREAT
