I highly recommend Comodo firewall, I believe it is the best in its field.

Comodo, by far, is the best free and commercial firewall out to date. It has very specific logs, lots of custmizable rules (advanced users) and the interface is really easy to understand.

http://tech.cybernetnews.com/index.php?s=zone+alarm and this for paid versions of Outpost: "The current version of Outpost Pro 4.0 and the upcoming Outpost Pro Security Suite 2007 are not Vista-compatible."

I'm not much for any beta and Comodo is still in alpha but when it goes to release, I'd switch. From all I've read, it is the best but you can't go wrong with ZA either. Used to be fairly heavy but I also haven't used it in some time.

true.. ZoneAlarm is pretty good but last time i was using it, communicated with zonelabs servers and just went 2 hell, starting to crash... they're probably sniffing users because of not buying their soft, damn :) so if u entered serial and not paid, disable in your za any updating general updates nor the antispyware updates, and do not share any info with zonelabs, hide ip option in za blabla....or buy it

pros: with ZoneAlarm u can really controll everything, every tiny shit happenning in the backround, what is connecting or going online, enable/disable-ing, every procces and app in windows, u can remove ads, its i think one the best fw (i mean whole version pro of za) so that make it pretty good option 4 total beginners or total perverts in modifying everything connceted to winxp and net :)

cons: u need lot of some 2 learn using it in the right way, i think so, cause it's very annoying
eaTs 2 MUCH RaM, ok if have 2gigs allright, 1 will do, but with 512mb windows are choking, even removing ZA is kind of a problem,it must be done manualy: http://forums.windrivers.com/showthread.php?t=77416

conclusion: so if dont surf around porn, warez and other pretty dangerous stuff and you are advanced user who knows what causes possible threats in winxp (enabled.services-in-controlpanel-administrativetools) i think u dont need fw at all, but if u wanna feel more secure install TINY personal fw, am using it now and it doesn't bothers like za, it takes just 5-10mb ram in win, the best choice according to lot of reviews on net for the of non-advanced fw-s, tiny p. fw ;)

btw. install protowall for ip filtering like vatsup69 said, important when using p2p, against RIAA and similar crap

cr00mpeer---best p2p client :))
