Hi forumers,
I want to get a new PC system and cant really decide on a CPU or motherboard that is good and easy on the wallet. What I got so far, and was considering to buy, is a Pentium D 935 (3.2Ghz) accompanied by a Gigabyte motherboard GA-965P-DS3P, dual channel 2Gb memory (667Hz), and a 160Gb Seagate Hardrive. I was then told I should get a SATA hard drive as it is faster in regards to file transfer and suff. Core2duo was another option, but I found that the prices are high and the clock speed is less than the P-D 935.
Then I met a friend who suggested a AMD AM2 Athlon X2 4600+, which is about 2.4Ghz (not too fast). But what I've discovered is that the Gigabyte motherboards (such as GA-M57SLI-S4) that support AMD have a faster FSB speed than that of the Intel variety. Which prompted the question, would a 3.2Ghz Pentium D run faster than a 2.4Ghz Athlon64 with a faster FSB?
Reading forums such as AMD or Intel, caused me to rethink my options as everyone seemed to go for AMD. I have an AMD computer at it seems to suck, maybe because its 7 years old, actually that's probably the reason. I've OCed it to around 1.9Ghz running on 512Mb of memory and it seems okay, but the 4600+ Athlon64's clock speed is 2.4Ghz, not much difference to 1.9GHz. Will the difference be significant? Probably.
Does anyone have any suggestions or tips on CPU and motherboard chose?
P.S. I will be using the PC for general purposes, such as burning, photoshop etc.

Well, I can guarantee that the Athlon 64 X2 4600+ is quite faster than the PD 935, although the Core 2 Duo and the 4600+ have slower clock rates, they can do "more instructions per clock", thus making it more reliable than the 3.2GHz Pentium D. Now, as for a Core 2 Duo or a AMD decision, that also depends on your budget, AMDs tend to be cheaper, but they are practially the same performance as the counterparts of Intel (which is still a big battle out there lol), 4600+ -> C2Duo E6600. Of course for AMD processors, socket AM2 highly advised, since 939 boards and CPU's are getting rare and expensive.
Regarding your question about AMD's speeds, an Athlon 64 X2 running at 2.4GHz has alot more performance than a single core Athlon @ 1.9GHz. Nowadays, high clock rates are not everything that tells how good a CPU is O_o
About the motherboards I'd recommend anything for Intel with chipset Intel 965 and higher, or nForce 590SLi or 650/680i (If you're interested in using dual cards), for AMD: nForce 590SLi or even 650/680i, which also depends on how many money you're willing to spend.

clocks speeds are only good for comparing between the same model family.
a e6600 is about the same performance wise as a 5600/6000 x2 depending on the app/benchmark.
i may seem biasd as i have a c2d setup but i would say intel is they way to go for a new build today. intel have no plans to chance socket type again the near future so it means more upgrade ability for you too. just make sure your mobo can support a 1333fsb as the newwer/future intel cpus will need it.

A year ago I would have said go with AMD, but with Inte's new Core 2 Duo processors I can't say that. The Core 2 Duo line of processors is heads and shoulders above any comparable AMD processor.

Whats the total amount you can spend on the cpu and motherboard? Knowing this will help us make suggestions on the cpu and motherboard.

I'm not going too far with this system, so a budget of around $500Aus. With the power unit, a Coolmaster 500-550W should be okay right? But I guess I wont be adding much peripherals to the mobo, would a 450W be alright?
So PeaInAPod, you're saying that a core2duo would be better than an Athlon64 X2? I've looked up two CPU's costing around $150Aus (which is already chewing most of the budget), Core2duo E4300 (1.8Ghz) and the Athlon 4600+ (2.4Ghz) as mentioned. Athlon is already winning by clock speed, but Core2duo has a slightly larger cache (I think).
In regards to the motherboard, Grayz reccomended a motherboard with a nForce 590SLi or P965 (or higher) chipset. The GA-965P-DS3P has a 965 chipset and can support the new quad-core, which will come in handy in a few years...he he. nForce 590SLi motherboard chipsets are pretty dear, so I think a nForce 570-SLI mobo should be okay right?

Well, if you're thinking in a Quad Core CPU, nForce 570/590 are unable to support it, only P965 (or higher) or nForce 650/680 currently support that CPU.
From what I know the nForce 570 isn't that good compared to P965 and 590, specially if you want to do some overclocking. From what I saw in this forum, the E4300 can overclock really good, so it might be a good choice, to get one and the GA-965P-DS3P. (Of course this is only an opinion O_o)

Thanks for the forum aabbccdd, but there's 166 pages, how on earth do I find the page that answers my question? It'll take me a week to go through all those pages, and most of it is just people chatting about nothing.
