Hi everyone, I am trying to clean off my PC of movies and videos and burn them onto DVD's, but having alot of trouble.. Nero used to work fine, but now it seems to lead in, then pop my disc out without even finishing it, or it will fail completely, I'm about to give up on Nero, I really need to make room on my computer, and just want to get these movies and videos deleted off my PC, but saved on a disc.. to speed my PC up, I have my log of what happened when I tried it on Nero Burning ROM:

You've been hit with the power calibration error:

1:09:47 PM #24 CDR -1106 File Writer.cpp, Line 278
Power calibration error
H: PHILIPS DVD8421

I've heard this could be a drive problem, media problem or something else.

You have an old drive (this is in a HP comp, right?), with old firmware, the latest update (10/2004) is located here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softw...item=pv-25051-1

You are trying to burn to 16X media, your drive might not support it even with the updated firmware.

You also home a Roxio driver here.

Existing drivers:
File 'Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS': Ver=8.0.0.212 , size=2560 bytes, created 11/3/2005 3:00:00 AM

Try the firmware update first, it might solve your problem.

Hi hobbitt, thanks for responding...

I have a Compaq Presidio PC, and I think the driver said when I checked the hardware, it was from 2001, and could not find an update for it at all.. would that update be ok to use on a Compaq?

I don't have a Roxio program.. isn't that another type of burning program like Nero? wow.. If I have that, I didn't know about it..

SO this is my darn drive then? blah

Actually the CDRALW2K.SYS is an Adaptec driver, not necessarily (but usually is) associated with Roxio. It could be a left-over if you ever had it on the computer and then uninstalled it.

Yep, it looks to me that your drive is the culprit. If you can find some 8X media it might still work fine, the 16X stuff is just too new for it's firmware to handle. Probably works fine as a reader/player.

You could try flashing with the HP firmware, but there is a possibility that the flashing could make your drive inoperatable. HP now owns Compaq so I might give it a try. The firmware upgrade is from 2004, almost 3 yrs ago, and I can't remember when the 16X dvds came out. It's very possible flashing won't help.

Not all is lost though if your drive still reads fine. If you want to burn the new media, you'll have to upgrade your drive. It's easy to do, just unplug the old and plug in the new. No drivers to install.

Check around this site for good recommendations on drives if you're interested. Depending on where you're located, you can pick up a good drive for around $40.00 US.

Do you mean the 16x is the sony dvd itself? I know sometimes my PC was picky about what brand I was using, but I figured sony would be ok, I was using maxell before, tried it again, and that didn't do it.. and also I been trying to burn at 8x and then tried at 4x at the burn speed option it gives you on the Nero....and I kept getting the same errors, but I will try to download the hp upgrade and see how it does! thanks!

What I mean is that your drive's firmware is so old that it doesn't know how to burn to the 16X media. Even if you update your firmware, it's possible that it still will not write to the 16X media sucessfully.

Your current drive is not "bad", it's just old. It's like having (an trying to use) an original Pentium CPU when all the software is writtenfor a Pentium 4(which is 300 times faster).

Your drive is designed {because of it's firmware) to burn 8X media at the most. It doesn't know how to burn to the 16X media which requires a different lazer power.

If you can find some decent 8X MAX media, you might be all right.

I think you mean burner.

Yes, I'd take this as a huge excuse to get a new, up-to-date burner. ;-}

Be sure that you investigate the various drives available!

Ahhh! I always thought the Philips was the drive device, and the Nero was more of the burner lol...I figure I needed to get the Philips "drive" device replaced lol...

So, is this something I need to bring my PC into a shop to do, or is this something that is paid for online and can be easily installed and downloaded on my pc myself? I don't know how hard this is to do.. I'm not very tecchie. Which are really good burners to even have?

It's actually easier to do than swapping out RAM.

You just shut down your computer, open up the case, un-hook your corrent dvd-drive,

reinstall your new drive, re-plug the connections, close the case & fire it back up.
