im out of hdd room need to burn out some movies. Nero (or any other burn prog) quit working months ago. i can figure it out, heres what i do know:
--DVD+R rarely burn successfully...when they do it wont playu in my stand alone
--dvd rw work about 90% of the time
--ive tried all kinds of media, sony to imation to tdk to verbatim
--cds burn fine
--data dvds burn fine
--lead in/lead out used to be quick, now they take forever, and Nero usually crashes on lead out 85% of the time
--the 1 constant ive noticed is in the Nero log under "scsi device map" nothing is listed. every other persons log ive looked at online have something listed there, ...not me! so thats my ??? i guess , why dont i have anything listed under scsi device map

btw--2 burners..both stopped burning at the same time. & im using vista ultimate.

any response is appreciated

i think the latest Nero, but ive tried a few difft ones
and as far as the built in crap...no go either, when you 1st put a blank in and it says something like format disc (or whatever) itll say estimating time remaining..and stay that way for ever. btw my drivers are current

--updated : so i was looking a few posts down, and it had a link to check dma..so i did. in there it said go to device manager, scroll down to ide ata/atapi controllers, find the primary and 2ndary etc etc.. im not seeing that, all i see listed in mine is

ata channel 0
ata channel 0
ata channel 1
ata channel 1
via bus master ide controller-0571
via serial ata controller-3149

this shed any light on nething???

I Spoke to my mate and he said check your burner to see if it set to master or slave and which IDE channel it is on (i.e. IDE 0,IDE 1,) make sure your burner is set to master and is on a seprate IDE channel then your hard drive. If that does not work find out what model/make your burner is and find the right firmware update, flash the burner with updated firmware, BUT make sure it is the right firmware or it could end up killing your burner for good.

this thanks to my mate hydromalc and navskin

I don't do vista, and I don't do Nero 7 yet, but you said you've tried several different versions of Nero. Did you uninstall and run the clean tools before reinstalling? Have you installed any other burning software? This could mess up Nero, especially roxio.

Can you post a Nero history/error log? This could help us help you.

if you dont do vista how can you help. windows vista is diffrent than any other oprating system. windows vista uninstalls programs in a diffrent way as it remove everthing to do with the name of the program. inc logs and stuff like that.

try a reinstall of vista it could be a windows problem if that dose not work then i would try to remove one of the drive and then try to burn a dvd that might work or try clean the drive with a lenz cleaner. that is al i can think of now to try.

@jones069
When did both drives go? When you updated to Vista or before?

What are the makes and models of them?

Right click on the sata (serial ata) controller - I think that's where your DMA will be listed.

Nothing showing under scsi devices running Vista is normal - just a Vista thing w/ Nero.
Post your Nero log - will be helpfully.

thats too bad..dont hijack my thread!

both drives stopped working at the same time,(stopped burning dvd movies that is- i can burn dvd data/cd fine and dvd rw movies some of the time. i think its got something to do with why i dont show anything under scsi device maps in the Nero log. maybe when i put the new power supply in, i changed the order of things. i do remember taking ALL the ide cables off and the drives out to "clean" shit up. somebody mentioned that if i had a burner on the same ide as a hdd????? i dont know, ill take it apart later and see if anythings not connected right. dont really know what im looking 4 tho

So you're saying the drives started working intermittently once you changed the power supply? Anything else change?

Make sure each drive is on it's own power connector.

Post the Nero log too. I don't think it has anything to do with the drives not showing up under scsi devices - running Vista they don't - running XP they do. Again just a Nero thing.
If you looked at the successful cd and data dvd logs you'd see them missing there too.

so..i opened her up disconnected everything and re-set it up in the following order (if i remember correctly) 2ndary ide-->hdd(master) burner2 (slave); primary ide--> burner 1 (set to cs) attached on "master" plug in ide cable. diff't power supply connecters on each burner. i think thats all correct eh? at any rate the burning problem cont EXACTLY unchanged. i saved a log just now, only thing i see wrong is illegal key request but i see that on alot of peoples. low-end verbatims, but ive tried many many kinds of media w/ the same results..and dont comment on the 8x speep cuz ive tried every difft speed w/ no results. heres the log, some1 who knows what theyre doing please have a look and see if anything jumps out at ya

sorry about the double post, but i wanted to separate the 2 logs. this log is the same vts folder burned on a rw disc. the illegal key request still shows up, but not only does the burn complete successfully..it plays fine (choppy/hanging in a few spots, but ithink thats a result of the scratched and dirty rw disc) the only diff should be the speed cuzz the rw only handles 4x. so now ill try the same vts folder on a DVD+R at 4x. heres that log::

Ok when you connected the drives back again ideally the hard disk drive should be on the primary ide and the 2 burners on the secondary ide.

If this is a Dell then they prefer the CS jumper setting. Otherwise the jumper should be set to the connection on the ide cable - like master to master.

Looking at both drives never are very good and they may be dying out.
The Aopen only has a max burn speed of 4x for +R media only.
The other burn a BTC/Emprex was last updated in 2005 so newer media like 16x speed may be hit or miss.
That could be why your having better luck with RW media - not much has changed with it over the years so most drives support them pretty well.

Personally I would replace one of the burners 1st - they are so much cheaper. Heck with all the coasters you've had now that may have paid for one :)

I've seen this drive - Drive: DVDRW IDE 16X show up in quite a few failed burn logs.
I have it memorized know :)
I think BTC/Emprex is no longer around. I remember reading something at cdfreaks - but I could be wrong.

Here's a link to the info on the drive from the firmware page.

edit: fix link :)

well, no doubt both my drives are getting old and outdated, but its just TOO coincidental that they both quit burning dvd-video at the same time, right after i removed/replaced the guts to change the power supply. thats why i dont think the firmware is to blame either

See my post above about the config - you may not have it right.

If you need to reopen the pc again - just leave one drive connected like the BTC and see what happens.

so get this..i went to the firmware page you linked to, didnt know what i was looking for or doing, clicked on and downloaded the version that says "new". i read a hundred times the disclaimer that says you can really f up your drive if you dont know what your doing..& i dont, but i figured that if i mess it up and make the drive useless at least i now have a reason to go buy a new one right?
so i installed it, rebooted and burned that same video folder in Nero on a DVD+R @ 4x speed...fungkic flawless!! did a 2nd in Nero same settings..perfect! got ballsy and tried an iso w/ imgburn.....played perfect! go figure? have not tried the aopen drive yet though

Yeah they always list a disclaimer but flashing the drive with firmware really isn't that bad. Now if you're doing it during a thunderstorm may be a different matter :)

Hmmm I would have thought the one you had was the latest A188 but hey if A187 is doing the trick good deal.
