Issues with Limewire's Direct Connect Feature

Trying to get files directly from a friend of mine and I want to use direct connect via limewire (FTP is better but he isnt gonna install it). Are these steps correct?:

1) I forward a particular port for limewire to my router (just one port? what number? does he need to forward a port? same port as me?).

2) I set Manual Port Forwarding in the Options menu of Limewire.

3) I attempt to connect through Direct Connect using his IP and the port I forwarded.

I'm not 100% sure on this, as direct connecting(is dangerous unless you trust the other party 100%) and I haven't used limewire(except for mp3) in ages. But, since the data is on his computer....you direct connect with HIS IP address...and HE needs to forward his port to YOU(open a hole in his firewall etc)
