Weird Nero 7.10 problem

I have Been using Nero with nothing but sucess for over a year now. But now suddenly any time I try to burn a dual layer disc I get a write error as it starts to burn layer 2.
I have burned around 50 dual layers with NO problem, this just started happening a few days ago and happens EVERY time. I can burn single layer dvds fine.

Looks to my that your drive is not recognizing your media.

Your drive probably has no problem with the orginal 2.4x media which is becoming harder to find.
You might want to cut back on any multi-tasking or other programs running at the same time, your free memory is down to 200 meg.

What media are you using? Like verbatim DL +R 8x. The log only shows that it's dual layer. Verbatim would be the best dual layer to use.
If it's the newer 8x dual layer the older drives may not do as well with it - here's a post about that - link

Probably not playing into this burn turn DMA back on for this drive. Here's a guide.
Give ImgBurn at try too. Great free burning program and I prefer it over Nero for dual layer burning. ImgBurn
Use the build mode to add non image files to burn.

Okay lets see. The Media I am using is Memorex dvd+R DL (I have been using the same media sucessfully though for some time so I think its probably something else but who knows)
I downloaded the drive update so I will try applying it now.
The link for Imgburn diddnt work for some reason so I will try to search for it seperately.
I usually have utorrent running so maybe thats why the memory was so low.
Thanks for all of these tips, I will try them all and get back to you.

Did you find ImgBurn? The link above should be working.
Memorex uses different manufacturers for their media so you may have gotten different ones. Can be hurt or miss.
Hopefully the firmware will do the trick.

I DID find imgburn. However I am still trying to figure out how to use it. It is definantly not as user friendly as Nero. I mean before I would use dvd decrypter, then use Nero burning rom and that was it. I still cannot find out exactly HOW to use imgburn the right way.
I did everything else that everyone suggested however so I am going to try and use Nero again just to see. I just hope zi dont end up with a 4th DL coaster. Those things are expensive :)

In fact. For just straight up burning dvd video files (you know, the VTS folders, like you do with Nero) is there something ELSE you can reccomend besides imgburn?

ImgBurn isn't that bad :) Same developer as decrypter. It's the updated burn part of decrypter.
If you rip w/ decrypter then you could rip in iso mode then open the .mds file in ImgBurn to burn.

Hmmm for dual layer ImgBurn is all I really use w/ Nero occasionally.
With the updated firmware give Nero a go again. That may have done hte trick.
Can't blame you on not wanting to end up w/ a coaster - they are still a bit high in price!

Hey myrothe,
Binkie7(among others) also put me on the path to ImgBurn. I do agree with you about it not being as intuitive as Nero, but it's worth it to learn it (or at least the parts you will use). I've been using it for at least 6 months and still go fumbling around in it trying to do things.
But ImgBurn allows you to control the burn speed with DLs, Nero does not. I made a bunch of coasters thanks to using nero when they first came out with the 4X DLs. Nero maxed out the speed but they still burn best @ 2.4X.
I've even started using ImgBurn to burn regular disks, the 4.7s, becasue the burns are quicker, better and more reliable.
Keep working with it, it'll pay off in the long run. I've got a box with about 50 DL coasters in it because I procrastinated in learning ImgBurn enough to burn DLs.
BTW, I'm learn how to knit so I can knit covers for the coasters and give them as Christmas presents, don't want them to go to waste!

:) Thats funny. I will keep trying to use it, sounds like it pays off. I guess (forgive me if I am being a noob here) it makes an image of the dvd rather than breaking it into all of thse vts floders? Then you just burn the image? I am going to give er a try right now. Will let everyone know if I am sucessful.

Kinda like that.
To try and make it very simple here's an explanation.
If you have an image file like an iso in ImgBurn go to mode and pick write. Then add the image file.
If you have a non image file like a video_ts fodler go to mode and pick build. Then add the video_fs folder.
For both then pick the destination as your burner.

Okay, this is weird. SAME thing is happening with IMGBURN at the same point. Once it gets slightly past 50% (the point at which it switches to layer 2) I get an error and a coaster. IMGBURN calls it an I/O error (along with a lot of other things that I have no idea what they mean).
Heres the thing. I am not sure but I think every time I get these errors its with Dr Who discs. Now this is season 2, and if you hadnt heard this series was recalled because of the Bizzarre "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" incident (where for some reason one of the discs had a graphic scene from texas chainsaw massacre inexplicably written onto it). And these are the replacements.
Even more odd is the fact that I have had one fail, then tried to burn it again and had it work, only to have the next one fail.
It seems like around 80 percent of the time once it gets ready to burn layer 2 the buffer drops to zero, and the whole thing fails. Around 20 percent of the time the buffer drops to like 12 percent, everything stalls for a bit, and then it burns okay. And like I said the weird thing is this is with the SAME disc! It fails 2 or 3 times, then suddenly the buffer does not drop all the way and it works.
I am totally confused at this point.

UPDATE. I totally uninstalled Nero, used the cleaner tool and reinstalled. I also checked to see why I was in PIO mode. My primary isnt, but my secondary (Ide controller? Is that what its called? Going by memory here) was in "DMA if possible" mode but the actual mode was PIO.
I followed the guide and uninstalled it, rebooteted and had it reinstall the drive. I checked though and again it was in PIO mode. I switched it to "dma if possible" and then restarted again. Everything is now in "ultra DMA mode".
I then closed down all other non essential programs. I even first removed my internet cable so I was offline, then turned off my firewall.
I then tried to burn the disc with Nero once again (the same disc that has now failed me 4 times. 3 with Nero, once with IMGburn) and it worked, no prob.
I now have turned back on my firewall and anti virus programs (Micro trend and Mc Afee) and reconnected the internet (though I am leaving off UTORRENT as it is kind of a resource hog) and am going to just try to burn another dual layer disc to see if the PIO mode was the problem.

Yeah from the log above the dvd-rom drive was in PIO mode though since this isn't the burner and doesn't look like you were burning on the fly (ripping and burning at the same time) might not be the problem.

So weird. Tried it again with the internet ans Mc Afee and Trend Micro running, and it failed again. Then I once again removed my internet cable, closed my antivirus and firewall programs as well as freed up some memory using system mechanic, and tried it again and it burned flawlessly.
Something odd is happening. When my buffer level drops too low the burn fails at the point where it goes to burn layer 2. The buffer either drops all the way and it fails, or it drops to like 13 percent, pauses for a few seconds, and then goes back up to between 89 to 94 percent (like it usually is) and the burn succeeds.
Obviously the problem may be my memory. However as I said I am a noob. How do I find what is sucking up resources and possibly ruining my discs?

Are you keeping up on the pc maintenance bit?
Like disc defrag, disc cleanup, registry cleaner and virus scans?
How about cleaning out the inside of the pc?
You can also check in task manager (ctrl,alt,delete) and in the processes tab see whats running.
Most may look cryptic - so do a google on see what they are. Look at the ones that don't say system.
Beware though google will give you hits saying possible spyware/virus but will help you identify the name of the program running the process.

So do you think the laser might just be dirty? I mean is there a sepearate laser for the 2nd layer? I ask because single layer dvd burn fine, where as the dual layer, when they do fail fail when it goes to burn the 2nd layer.
Oddly enough these discs that fail continue to burn, and actually play fine on a pc, but will not play on a dvd player. Odd.
I have defragged and it does not seem to help. I have done the ctrl-alt-delete and looked through the running processes and I dont see anything running that shouldnt be running.
I absolutely cannot figure out at this time what is dropping the buffer down so low at the dual layer mark. Will keep tinkering however.

Can't get to technical on dual layer cause limited knowledge there.
But the laser has to adjust to burn to the 2nd layer.
It may be losing intensity(?) reason it bombs when it hits the 2nd layer.
For the ones that fail but still play in the pc - dvd drives are usually good at playing finalized discs - dvd players aren't so good at it.

Post a new Nero log that was generated after you updated the f/w of your burner. I'm curious regarding how your media is coding out.
I have a Sony burner, a DRU-800a that absolutely HATED anything Ritek(and no, binkie7, I have not tried burning Riteks on it since the cross-flash). That could be because Ritek DLs (& Ricoh) have a manufacturing problem with the transition to the second layer. This is with both the 2.4x & 4x media.
I've gone to using only Verbatim DLs. I know they are more expensive than the Memorex & Ritek, but when I factor in the cost of the coasters, the Verbs are a better deal.

Will do. However after a suggeston I recieved (on a video games chatroom no less) I uninstalled my burner, blew it out with a little "air in a can" and rebooted it (so that it automaticlly detected it and reinstalled it). I then tried a dl burn and it worked. In fact there wasnt even the huge buffer drop when proceeding to burn the second layer like before.
I am going to burn a few more tonight and hopefully it will work. If it starts to fail again I will send you my log.
