your version of Nero 6 is not the stablest version.... 6.6.0.18 is the most stablest version of Nero 6 and I would update it to that version. Here's how:
Before udating to 6.6.0.18 I would save the serial #, uninstall Nero, then use the cleaning tools : http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/eng/Clean_Tools.html
then do a registry clean up(free registry cleaner, CClean: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/downloadpage.aspx?1) and defrag...... then reboot!
install package one:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_nero_burning_rom/?539
then install package two:
http://www.nero.com/nero6/eng/Patch_for_NVE3.html
reboot and you're good to go!
also I would use better media. Stick with the MIJ rule (Made In Japan). Look for the MIJ on the label of the box of spindle (Taiyo Yuden, Sony, Maxell, and some Fuji)... the only exception to this rule is Verbatim, which is top notch media but made in Taiwan/Singapore and the only non MIJs I will use.

you need more memory! 256 RAM is way too small ....... do not multi task, no internet, shut off all unnecessary programs running in the background...... even shut down your anti virus program! An upgrade in RAM would be nice, too!

you are burning too close to the edge of your disk...... which is CMC MAGs..... that's crappy media, in my opinion! Use better media and then maybe you can burn to 4465...... but I don't recommend it! you could get reading errors! burn no closer than 4400...... some members recommend up to 4300MB!

you're still using and old interface..... you might have gone to 6.6.0.18 but you didn't use the Nero 6 cleaner before you re installed Nero 6.6.0.18! you should do it again!!!!

CMC MAG disks... like Memorex and others.... are not the best of media to use! Get better media....use Taiyo Yuden disks.... these are made in Japan and are top notch quality and are most recognized by burners and will increase your chances of a successful burn. You can find them online at supermediastore.com, meritline.com, rima.com, newegg.com and other online stores..... or just buy Verbatim, as these are also top notch disks but not made in Japan!

your firmware is up to date but I wouldn't buy much 16x media as it's not as compatible with older burners even with a firmware update. Stick with 8x media.

you are at the minimum of RAM for this program! shut off all unnecessary programs running in the background, NO multi tasking, NO internet, and even shut off your anti virus program!!!! If you can add more RAM all the better! How old is your computer?

you are burning too close to the edge of your disk...... which is CMC MAGs..... that's crappy media, in my opinion! Use better media and then maybe you can burn to 4465...... but I don't recommend it! you could get reading errors! burn no closer than 4400...... some members recommend up to 4300MB!

I did everthing accept the memory and I use better media and when I ran my burner I didn't have anything going

Still haven't remedied the problem with the old version....follow all the steps involved, including rebooting between steps.
You went from CMC Mag to Prodisc...not much difference when quality of media is concerned.
As IHOE suggested your drive may have outlived it's usefulness...with no firmware updates available and older media hard to find you may be forced to buying a new drive that will recognize the media that you are using. With that said your last shot would be to try Verbatim discs, which have an extremely high compatability rate and may give you a successful burn after all.

This error means that you are asking your burner to do something that is can't comprehend...firmware or media could fix this and as a last ditch effort a new drive.

The media are not the problem. Members prefer Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim for compatibility reasons which they attribute to quality. The problem is that they denigrate any non-TY/Verbatim media without knowing anything about quality standards.
Your Lite-on SOHW-1633 should work well with the CMC and Prodisc media you have tried as well as any Verbatim or TY media (except TY DVD+R 16X which were late to market and may not be supported well by your drive. In this case, too, it is a question of compatibility, not of quality.)
"Illegal disc" messages are typical of compatibility conflicts between drive and medium, but not in this case because your drive does support the media you have tried. Since you have followed every suggestion about RAM memory and updating your version of Nero, one last thing you can check is the jumper settings on the back of your drives. Even if you have a cable select system, try setting the jumper on the Lite-on to MASTER and moving in your system so that it is on the end of the IDE cable. Set the jumper on the Samsung to SLAVE and put it on the middle connector of the IDE cable. Reboot; disable both drives in Device Manager, then reinstall them so that the computer refreshes the drivers. Then try once more. If that does not work, the problem may lie in the drive. It certainly does not lie in the media, and your problems with Verbatim are evidence that the discs are not at fault.

Joe, I'm by no means trying to make out about what you said RE conflict with drive and medium is wrong, as I understand that is correct, but you surely can't argue that CMC or Prodisc manufacture their discs to the same quality as Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim? After all, there is a big difference in the quality of the dyes used, is there not?
sixfigure, have you tried updating your firmware?

CMC uses azo-cyanine (the MKK azo-cyanine dye they use for their production of Verbatim discs) from at least one other source as well as cyanine. The major brands who source from CMC specify azo-cyanine.
Prodisc uses azo-cyanine and Fuji's Oxonol. Oxonol appears to be superior to other dyes in terms of long-term environmental stability.
CMC's production of DVD media is to the same standard throughout the factory. although certain production lines may give them more trouble than other lines. Having multiple lines from different manufacturers is more difficult than having multiple lines from a single supplier because the settings and resolution of problems varies between manufacturers. Verbatim media are made on a specified line with MKK azo-cyanine dye. That helps a great deal. CMC's major problem is being the largest producer in the world and having manufacturing lines from multiple sources. Taiyo Yuden is a much smaller producer, but their manufacturing costs are so high that they have had to cut out the middlemen in order to keep selling. Smaller production on uniform lines does offer some advantages, but cost of production is not one of them.
Except for cyanine dyes, there is little difference in the dye qualities except for Oxonol's advantages of environmental stability (and lower cost but with the disadvantage of requiring slightly higher power). The biggest difference is firmware support of the M-codes followed by differences in manufacturing processes, including packaging. A well made disc can be damaged with improper packaging or improper handling by untrained workers. The newest workers in packaging are generally assigned to CD-Rs, not to DVDs; but there are slip ups now and then.

He has no personal preference Ripper, all the media in the world is manufactured to the same specs and supplied by the same company...they just ship 'em where ever and put different labels on all of them. High compatability and success rates mean nothing becuase all of Joe's personal equipment readily plays any and everything he throws at them, short of a cheese pizza.
I've said it before and I'll say it again...until Memorex, Prodisc, Ritek etc. can produce the same high level results that Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden do I will continue to "push" those brands. If someone can use the latter (I can BTW and have a half spindle of CMC Memorex sitting on my desk) I don't discourage their use until a problem arises and all other avenues to rectify the bad results have been acted on.

I just want to add....... I will continue to recommend DigitalFAQs' Blank Media Guide until some one else does a better job at a blank media guide then I'll recommend their guide. Just another thing that Joe bothers me about. No offense Joe.

I have no personal preference, although I like the test results from the Oxonol dyes used by Prodisc for their long-term stability. LOCOENG is correct about my lack of preference. I have over 100 different drives with different states of firmware, and each stack of disc samples I have has the drive test results on it. If I need to record a disc, I can take just about any disc I have and record it on a particular drive with excellent results. That is a luxury most people do not have. I avoid Umedisc because I found poor interchange results (that's what CATs is for), and I have to be particular about MBI because of limited compatibility. Other than that, I have no problems. I avoid all "no-name" discs because I have found that they often tend to be B-grade or discs from unlicensed factories.
I do check all recorded discs under a halogen light to detect any physical flaws. Two years ago CMC had problems with dye comets, perhaps due to poor cleanliness or agglomerattes in the piping systems. That happens far less often these days. The only discs that have gone bad on me in the past were a Princo and a Taiyo Yuden.
All discs are actually made to the same standards presented by the DVD Forum or the DVD+RW Alliance. What differs are the tolerances, the standard deviations, and the weighting of the over 80 different test specifications (improving one often reduces another). Some factories are better at that than others. Processes differ in all of them, and as I said before, it is the process that will make the greatest difference in the final result. The sarcastic response seemed to have overlooked this detail.
Half of what digitalfaq states is correct. Half is nonsense. If a reader is knowledgeable about which half is which, it may be useful reading. For technical people, it is a source of humor. A better guide would list the M-codes, the drive models and firmware, and have independent test results done on a calibrated drive such as a Pulstech. That is very expensive and time consuming. An environmental test, for example, takes 10 months to complete. Results from such testing are the only valid way to accurately determine what is good and what is not. "It works/doesn't work" is insufficient a means of testing quality although it may be useful for determining compatibility. I see so many cases, such as the one initiating this thread, that indicate the source of the problem has nothing to do with the medium; but that does not prevent people from jumping to preferred conclusions. Switching from TDK to Verbatim will not solve a customer's problem if his or her computer is not plugged in. What happens so often is that the recommendation is to avoid a certain brand and make other changes, such as plugging the computer into the mains. The the user plugs in and turns on the computer, successfully records onto a Verbatim medium, and has PROOF that Verbatim is better than TDK or some other brand! When he tried TDK, the computer would not even turn on. Those kinds of arguments often show up here.

I agree with your argument completely Joe, but most of the new members here aren't interested in the technojargon and are just looking for something that works and works NOW. Additionally, these same people don't have hundreds of drives and hundreds of different brands of media at their fingertips to test for various success rates. In a lot of cases they have an OEM drive that came preinstalled in their tower that is seeing little or no support through firmware updates...that typically just makes things worse. This is why most members here turn to the brands that have a wider compatibility range such as Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden. I proudly refer users to these brands I am not affiliated with either nor do I work for either. In other words it doesn't benefit me in any way make these suggestions...but sometimes I wonder if you work for CMC Magnetics or Memorex, simply because you seem more than willing to come to the rescue when someone makes a suggestion of using Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden. I sometimes feel like I'm being followed around the forum and being drawn into these exchanges. Tell me this, when would you go so far to suggest a different brand of media? We can use this thread for now...so what would have this poster do to remedy his problems? I will gladly step aside and let you have the floor to actually make a contribution that will help the OP rather than confuse him by discrediting the advise of media.

Not once have I ever suggested to anyone to try CMC, Memorex, HP, Philips, Fuji, or any any other brand when someone has merely recommended trying Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. In fact, I have never recommended any brand at all. I have no allegiance to any brand or to any factory. What I have done is defend brands from unbased attacks on their quality when the evidence points to an incompatibility issue rather than a quality issue. (One poster went so far as to suggest the best thing would be to blow up the CMC factory so that everyone would use Verbatim--despite the fact that the Verbatim discs he was praising are made in the same factory he wanted destroyed.) My defense has also included Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, and Sony, not just Taiwanese or Indian brands. Recommending Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim is fine--and helpful-- as long as the recommender refrains from making slanderous attacks on a different brand based on false information ("cheap" dyes, "dye rot," "low reflectivity," "crappy media," and so forth.) or on opinions presented as facts.
Sixfigure is getting messages that indicate a problem with his drive. The firmware version he has should support the discs he has unless something is wrong with the drive. I base this guess on the four SOHW-1633 drives I have. I did make a mistake in not catching his statement that the use of "better media" was not to Verbatim but to Prodisc's Fuji-dye disc which requires more laser power than that required by cyanine or azo-cyanine dyes. I thought he had made the switch to Verbatim, and that is my mistake. But the messages he is getting suggests lack of firmware support despite the fact that version BSOY does support the M-codes in question.
It is apparent he could have a conflict with Roxio vs. Nero. He claims he took care of that. There is also a possibility that his ASPI layer may have been corrupted, but a reinstall should have fixed that. My last suggestion was to check the drive jumpers. I have run into many weird problems swapping scores of drives in and out of computers--and the jumper conflicts were the cause of half of them.
When would I recommend a different brand of media? When a user tries to use a Taiwanese-produced disc (other than Verbatim) in his or her new Japanese drive with a firmware version of 1.0. Such a drive is probably only aligned for Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, and maybe Maxell M-codes (Maxell media are now made by Ritek.). That makes "made in Japan" media look good (even if they are made in Taipei) and all other media look bad. That's Japanese marketing. It also applied to analogue cassette decks when they were popular. Those restrictions hurt consumers. Some of those consumers turn to AfterDawn for advice. When the advice is to update the firmware if an update is available and/or switch to more compatible media such as Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim, that advice is sound. When the advice includes "That stuff you are using is pure crap!"--only then do I "come to the rescue" to try to clarify the situation.
