I bought a new computer about 3 months ago. Hp with vista and I bought nero 7. I had relatively no problems getting dvd's to burn using this. I have always used fuji cd+r. This also work in my dvd recorder for my tv. Now I can't get it to burn at all. I think the dvd drive might be hooped. It seems to have trouble even reading discs that aren't perfect. Anyway can someone look at my log. This last time I tryed using shrink first but still another coaster. ********** Nero Recode **********

Hi joeyjoejo
Here's a few suggestions:

Direct burning: true
Turn off burn at once. Let recode encode the dvd 1st then it will start the burn. If there's a problem encoding and it fails you'll a least save a disc.

Disc Manufacturer ID: RITEK
Not bad but may not be compatible with your drive and will be hit or miss. Fuji uses different manufacturers so you can get a different one when you buy a new spindle. For Fuji look for made in Japan.

To rule out the drive try another brand of dvd - ones to try Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or made in japan only Fuji, Sony or Maxell.

File 'Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS'
Roxio and Nero don't always play well so you can uninstall Roxio and run the zap tool

Not all drives are good at reading 'less than perfect' discs - some do better then others with these. Yours may be one that isn't as good at it.

removed roxio. Went to the local big box store for some discs. If you can believe it, not one single package of discs in the whole place was made in Japan. All made in taiwan. I checked the fuji's I bought and they are made in taiwan. I looked at some discs I bought at the same time I bought my computer and they are also fuji's made in taiwan. These were the discs I have been using since I got my computer and have been sucessful with them up until now. I tried burning a cd and it was successful. I tried burning a movie again using some maxell discs that I bought. It failed again. So here is the log for this one. ********** Nero Recode **********

Yeah trying to find made in Japan is not as easy as it once was - that's why I mainly buy mine online.

The ones you picked up tonight unfortunately are made by once of worst - CMC.
You now getting an illegal disc error which usually means the firmware of the drive doesn't support the media you're using. But the media codes are listed in the log.

Take the burn speed down from 16x to 8x or lower on these.

I'd also check HP site and see if they have any updated for the pc especially a firmware update.

I tried downloading imgburn thinking that this might be a nero issue but using that imgburn I got hung up on writing in. Eventually, I got a power calibration error using the fuji discs with imgburn. I didn't even want to try with the maxell's. Unfortunately, the store I went to "worst buy" had a pretty limited selection of discs to choose from no verbatim, and as I said now I'm stuck with about 100 fuji discs that won't work and a 25 pack of maxell's that are seemingly worse. I bought the big pack of fuji's because until now they had been working well for me. They were on sale for pretty cheap. Now I know why. I'll see if I can find some verbatims around town tommorrow but I'm still wondering if the drive itself is messed up. The computer is still under warranty but I don't know how the service will work if technically the drive still reads discs and as I said I burnt a cd earlier. I just can't get it to burn to a dvd. It doesn't help that I'm not the most computer savy person. I checked the hp site and there doesn't appear to be any updates for this drive tsst 652m although it appears this drive is actually made by samsung. The only references I could find for it were in asian characters. Anyway, I appeciate your help. You must have the patience of a saint to deal with this all the time. Unfortunely, I'm at my wits end, for tonight anyways. I'm just about ready to throw this computer out the window. I'll try again tomorrow. Thanks again. Joel

You are burning Wright to the edge of the disk according to your log

7:29:18 PM #8 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 307
Last possible write address on media: 2295103 (510:01.28, 4482MB)
Last address to be written: 2283631 (507:28.31, 4460MB)

On single layer disk not recommended to burn no more then 4350mb doesn?t help as well with poor disk brand and burning at 16x speed like its been said try getting the final size down

Not a problem joeyjoejo
You're actually not the only one who is having a problem with this same drive on a hp pc running Vista. Another member here is also

Try the Verbs or Sony - if the drive can't burn them even though it can burn cd's I'd contact HP for a replacement. Use that warranty.
I also would tell them no TSST drive (toshiba-samsung).
You would ahve then tried several brands and 2 different programs with no luck.
But one other thing to chekc anything change with the pc since this problem started?

You can reduce the target size too like killalot posted - on lower quality discs that's usually where they can fail or have playback problems. But first we gotta get you burning to where it at least burns to this point.

Hi I bought some verbatims today but they are made in taiwan. Does it matter with verbatim where they were made? At the store I was at they had some maxell's in a 10 pack that were made in Japan but the bigger packs were all taiwan. Should I try these verbatims or return them and try to get something else. I just don't want to keep buying discs that I can't end up using. So as far as adjusting the size of the movie I just pick custom size and set for a smaller file size? I added itunes not that long ago but I burned dvds since then. I just put on a new norton anti virus but I was unable to burn before changing that. Virus scan finds nothing. In looking online this disc drive seems like it's not the best and seems to have more than it's share of issues. If I pick up sony's do they have to be made in japan. Because a lot of the sony's I found were made in taiwan as well.

The Verbs and Sonys made in Taiwan are fine.

The Verbs will be made by MCC (great stuff) and the Sony's will be made by Sony themselves so you're good there.
I don't want to see you run around and keep buying discs either but just trying to rule out all possibilities.
Now if you can't burn the Verbs consistently and with what you've tried along with nothing no major pc changes that would have caused this time to call HP and get a replacement that's not the same one.

Give one of those Verbs a go and let see what happens.
Keep us posted.

Oh and causes for the power calibration are some of these:
°Firmware needs an update - tried that none available
°Switch media - trying that - 2 a no go and let's see what the 3rd does:)
°Dirty lens - you can try blowing some can air in the drive or use a dvd lens cleaners (not thinking this is the case but I could be wrong)
°Poor power or sharing a power connection - you can open the case and try a different power connector - should have 1 or 2 free ones. Might want to give this a go
°Drive is on it's way out.

well I tried the verbatims and still no go. Got power calibration error. I was thinking that maybe the lens is dirty as the drive also seems to have issues with dirty or scratched discs. I'll check the power conection to the drive. Do I just unplug the power connection then plug another one in or is there anything else to do as far as a set up. I'll post my log again. I tried burning at 4 times and also cut the dvd size to 4300 max. I'm thinking it's time for a new drive. If I can get a different drive, they will more than likely offer me an hp drive. Are they any good? Once again thanks for your help. I really appeciate your time. Joel ********** Nero Recode **********

Yeah very easy to change the power connector (just turn the pc off 1st :)). Unplug it and plug a new one in. You should have a few extras from the power supply (at least I hope HP would include them).

Try the lens cleaning too.
After that the only other thing I would try is uninstalling the drive in device manager - rebooting and letting windows reinstall.
May not help but can't hurt.
I'm not familiar w/ where it is in Vista but may be similar to XP -
right click on my computer>properties>hardware tab>device manager. Under dvd/cd drives right click on the drive and pick uninstall. Reboot.

HP doesn't always make their own drives - so it depends on who made it. Some are made by LiteOn which are great drives.
If you get the model # we might be able to find out who actually makes it.
Nothing really changed on the log or that stands out btw.

Again not a problem on the help :)

Keep us posted - good, bad or otherwise!

Well I have had enough, today I took my computer in to get looked at. I'm pretty sure I have a bad drive. This morning I tried a few dvd's and the drive would not even play them. It appeared like it couldn't even find the disc. These were brand new store bought dvd's. Hopefully they can figure this out and get me a new drive. I don't know what the chances are of me getting anything better than the drive I had but you can always hope. I pulled out my old laptop so I could at least check email and check out the internet. Man, I quickly remembered why I bought a new puter, this thing is SO slow it is ridiculous. What a piece of junk. It's like going back to the stone ages. :)Anyway I'll keep you posted if I hear anything and hopefully I'll be posting that I got a new drive and it works fine. Thanks again Joel

lol - it's funny how we get used to things - a few years ago your laptop was probably the 'in' thing in technology.

I'd tell them that you don't want the same drive - too many reports of problems. You not the only one with this problem w/ it.
Before you take it back from them - try to burn a dvd instore.
Sometimes they get one to burn and think all is ok - not always the case:)

Good luck and keep us posted!
