1. how can nero's capture mode be modified? it seems that it only has one quality of recording.

2. let's say i create a video to be put on DVD out of mpeg files. next, i use NeroVision to burn DVD files to a hard disc folder (VOB, IFO, BUP, etc; not an ISO image). is it possible to burn, say a 10GB project to hard disc folder, which i would later compress a bit with DVDShrink? it doesn't seem to want to upon first try, and i don't like the way Nero compresses mpeg files. thanks!

For point #2, in the compilation window, at the lower right, you can select DVD-9 and output to the hard drive.

thanks for trying to help, but i know that already. however, even with DVD-9 selected, if you want to burn 10GB of hard drive folder DVD files, it doesn't want to do it. i want to make it do it and then shrink it with DVDShrink once it's in DVD form, not while it's in MPEG form. any thoughts?

In the Nero Vision compilation window, click 'More' 'Video Options' 'DVD Video' 'Quality Settings' > Custom.
You can add files over the DVD-9 setting and write to hard disk (ignoring all warnings), but I don't care to wait the six hours to see the result - and if it does work, I wonder if DVD shrink will accept a 'DVD' that's more than DVD-9 anyway..

I already tried to do what you're asking and there is a limit on the size. I tried to convert a 10+ gig mpeg to dvd and my nerovision kept crashing. I pulled this out of the error file:

########################################################################################
[23:02:19] DVDEngine ERROR
[23:02:19] DVDEngine cause: 11 (max_size_exceeded)
[23:02:19] DVDEngine source: _DVDVideoBase
[23:02:19] DVDEngine description: VTSTT_VOBS is 13043494912, but shall be at most 9663657984.[23:02:19] DVDEngine ########################################################################################

Don't know how the sizes listed convert to a size for a mpeg or avi.

attar gave me this suggestion back then which I never tried:

Never seen a file that big.See if this can handle it.No chapters or anything just a standard video folder.

http://dl.afterdawn.com/vsoDivxToDVD_setup_v0.5.2b.exe
Import the file(s) (AVI, MPEG, VOB)
Output (standard DVD file format) to a folder on the HDD.
Set 'Aspect' to 4:3 (if you have a regular tv)
Set 'Standard' to NTSC (if you live in North America)

I ended up spliting the mpeg and burning 2 disks.

Here's the link to the thread if you want to look at it.

Looks like the largest VTSTT_VOBS (source file??) Nerovision will accept is 9.437 gigs in size (if max size allowed is divided by 1024).
