Well, not exactly 'install', but once it is installed (several tries so far) the built-in decoder won't handle plain MPEG-2 720x480 captures, and no codec package I install (K-Lite for one) seems to want to do the work when I uncheck the Use Built-In option.

I'm using the original WinAVI 8.0 download from May, plus a CORE.DLL I got from the developers after I reported that files >4GB were locking up WinAVI when it examined them before processing. This package has installed several times on my Core 2 Duo machine and never complained once, but on the old Compaq it refuses to work. Could the Compaq's 2001-ish 1.33Ghz AMD CPU be an issue where the C2D isn't? There was a suggestion on the WinAVI help page to put some PowerDVD codec stuff into the right WinAVI directory, but that didn't help.

If I try to convert WMV to WMV like to enlarge it, that seems to work OK. I don't have any other video types handy for testing, but since Windows Media Player has no problem playing the MPEG-2 files I'm trying to convert, I am hoping there's a solution out there somewhere.
