Ok i gather this is how its setup at the moment.

Modem to router to pc ethernet.

By default the router should assign your pc an dynamic inside ip address automatically, only if the dhcp server is enabled in the router which it normally is, when purchased from new. But then again its best to login to the router and check.

Nevertheless if enabled or not, you can enter a permanent static ip address details yourself which is the best option for alot of people.

Firstly you will need to the find out the routers (gateways) ip address. You may know it already but if not read through your routers manual to find it. or post the make & model of router you have.

As an example if your routers ip was 192.168.1.1

Then you would enter these details in your pc-

Ip address- 192.168.1.2

Subnet mask- 255.255.255.0 (is most common)

Defaukt gateway- 192.168.1.1

DNS server address- 192.168.1.1

There might be another box for the dns address, you can leave it blank.

After clicking OK button, in a few seconds it should set the ip address details you entered.

As your using virgin cable broadband they give you a static outside ip address which is permanent. don't get this confused with inside ip addresses as they are totally different things. An outside ip address is your identity to the world wide web. An inside ip is used to set a computers identity in a home network. Both inside and outside ip address can be static or dynamic, either have their advantages but the main thing to know is that dynamic ip can change itself automatically after restart of pc or router. A static ip will not change after restart, it will remain the same.

Should be a piece of cake.

Them lot at pc world are well known to have limited knowledge. It was around a year ago that a cousin of mine had to call out one of their staff to fix a dvd reading issue while it was under warranty. The diagnosis was that the dvd rom apparantly had been infected with a virus and had to be replaced. I laughed me head off when me cousin told me.

The ip address of the router/gateway is 192.168.0.1 So at the screen where you enter the static details enter these.

Ip address- 192.168.0.2

Subnet mask- 255.255.255.0

Defaukt gateway- 192.168.0.1

DNS server address- 192.168.0.1

If there is another box for dns addressleave it blank.

When you finish the setup you should good to go.

Oh good! the dhcp server is enabled then, so it can give out the ip address freely to the device.

No problem mate.

It could be that when you change routers or computers on a cable modem you have to reboot the modem to get it to reassign ip's

disconnect the data & power cables to the modem. disconnect the power to the router. shutdown the computers. reconnect the the power & data cables in that order. reconnect the power to the router then restart the computers. once windows is loaded then click on internet explorer & should be online. that works for me a number of times.
