Hi there I have a question. For some reason after I convert avi or divx and burn to a dvd to watch on my tv it is in black and white?? Any idea why?
After the conversion I can view it on my pc and it is in color with sound, after I use nero start smart the movie is in black and white I downloaded the shareware version and the same thing happens. Any suggestions as to why and how to fix it? thanks so much!

Are you selecting 'PAL' or 'NTSC' under 'Standard'?
Choose 'NTSC' for North America and 'PAL' for Europe/Australasia.

I feel so stupid *blush* I tried this but after I burn the dvd and play in my dvd player to watch on my tv it is still black and white. Any other ideas? I did one movie and it worked fine but no sound ... so I reformatted thinking I messed something up with an install for another program now I have sound but it they are all black and white even the one that worked previously. Any other ideas? I even downloaded the commercial version and it too is done in black and white.

@attar
Do you think it is a codec issue?

I think I solved your problem. Take a look at this thread...
http://forums.torrentspy.com/showthread.php?p=314754
This thread in specific is whats important...
Quote: Its an incompatability issue with your dvd player. For instance i watch a dvd that ive converted from an avi on my dvd player and its ok, but when a friend of mine goes to watch it on his its black and white, he puts it in his girlfriends player and its ok.

wow could it be that easy? My tv (whose picture tube is going anyway) is 12 yrs old and the 2 dvd players I have one is bout 7 and the other is only 2 yrs old both play it as B&W so perhaps the tv is the prob but....
I converted a divx movie and burned it and it was fine good sound and in color then when this started happening I reconverted and burned the same movie and now it is in B&W all setings remain the same ... that's what has me so confused. Going to switch out the tv see if that fixes it and... THANKS everyone for helping me

If the color tube on your TV is going I would bet money that that is the issue.

ok I went back through the movies I converted and burned all using same software the freeware version of DivxtoDVD and Nero Express and settings... it is interesting to note that out of 10 movies only 3 were in B&W so the dvd and tv theroy doesn't hold up..... *sigh*

Assuming that the VSO DivXtoDVD output is PAL files.
After VSO DivXtoDVD outputs the files to a folder, does the media player on the PC play the folder files in colour, etc ok?
After the DVD is burned, does the media player in the PC play the DVD ok?
@PeaInaPod
Quote: Do you think it is a codec issue?
Maybe, but the converting program has it's own codecs as does the standalone DVD player, so the odds would rule that out.
If files from the output folder or the final DVD plays ok in the PC, then the correct codec is in place.

Here is what I am doing....
download movie in Divx format (a few are avi, but I have this [problem with both formats)
Convert using the DivxtoDVD freeware version. (one I used a free decompression tool to resync the audio in the avi and it worked great)--- I played with all the combinations of settings as instructed
The movies all play fine on my PC and they are in color
I burn using Nero Express (I downloaded Final Burner to see if the software was the issue but I have no idea how to use it *sigh*)
After burning the movies play fine and in color on my pc BUT a few play in B&W on my dvd player connected to the tv (I have 2 a newer one and an older one both play it in B&W)
So why would only some play in B&W and the others play in color?
I TRULY appreciate all the help!

To see if Nero is responsible, burn the DVD with 'ImgBurn'.
locate the the folder containing the converted files.
http://www.imgburn.com/
Run ImgBurn
Click 'Mode' > 'Build'
Click 'Output' > 'Device'
Click 'File' > 'Browse for Folder', highlight on the 'VIDEO_TS' folder, > 'OK'
Set burning speed to 4x and click the green write button.
Run 'GSpot'
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/v26x/GSpot270a.zip
If you drag VTS_01_1.VOB from the burned DVD, it should indicate whether you have a PAL or NTSC disk.

Okey-dokey.
I assume that you want and now have an 'NTSC' DVD.
If you look at the B&W DVD's with GSpot, are they also 'NTSC'?
If they are, then Nero is having a problem with burns (speed too high)?
If the bad disks are showing as 'PAL' in GSpot then Nero is set to output 'PAL' instead of 'NTSC'.

I so appreciate your help it was nero (they were NTSC) I had a much older version the new one you said to use is perfect and free! All the movies that were in B&W are now in color and no sound issues!
