I recorded a home movie from a vhs tape onto a dvd (via my vhs-dvd recorder).

The dvd plays on my computer, but I cant get it to go into an editing program (i need to edit it down a bit). So i assumed that I needed to transfer the dvd into an mpeg format.

So how do I convert a dvd into an mpeg video so that i can edit the video on some editing software.

Do you have a specific editing program in mind, because the likes of TMPGenc DVD Author and others will open a standard DVD or DVD folder.
If the aim is to remove some frames from the beginning or end of a tape-to-DVD conversion then DVD Shrink can do that easily (and it's free).

well i was going to use windows moviemaker, just the cheapest version, the one that comes with the comp.

but perhaps I should get the editing system you are talking about if it imports video straight from a dvd for editing.

You could try renaming the VOB file (VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, etc) with .mpg on the end, that way Movie Maker should accept it.

OR:
This will join and convert the VOB files in a DVD folder.
(You also have to install 'net framework2' from the same link).

And:
You can use this it will convert VOB to MPEG2.
Select MPEG-2 as the output container.
