Well, my 5G 30GB iPod decided to stop working three days before I leave for a seven hour plane ride for a business trip...
No matter what kind of headphones, earbuds, whatever I plug in to the thing I can only hear through the left... But if I pull the jack out a little bit so that it "unclips" without coming completely out of the Ipod, I can hear through both, but I can't hear certain bits of the audio, I.E. backup singers, drums, ETC...
Any ideas what's going on and how I can fix it? Much obliged to anyone who can help...

I would have, but the case broke off when I dropped it once, so the inside of the case is cracked in the screw... hole... things...
My point being, they won't take the damn thing, I already tried taking it to a retail outlet...

Just because you don't know how to help him solve his issue, don't tell him it's broken. ;-)

First try cleaning it out with a toothpick or something that will fit in there without damaging it and see if that helps. Sometimes dirt and crap get in there and it prevents the sound signal from reaching parts of the headphone jack.

As I said, stick a toothpick in there and rub the edges. Sometimes it can get dirt or sticky stuff on the sides of the jack that make the headphones not work correctly.

I've talked to apple about sound distortion in earphones and they said by restoring your ipod it will help most of the time.

(Back from trip)
Neither the toothpick or restoring it worked, I took my iPod apart and cleaned the jack multiple times with anything that would fit in it...

Turns out the employee I had talked to before wasn't too intent on helping me or giving me accurate information... I took it to the Apple store today and they replaced the jack, after I had to explain what the problem was multiple times and avoid their bullshit flowchart questions, of course...
"Genius Bar"? not hardly. 9_9
