I just bought a new 160GB Maxtor and I want to use it as a Master on my Dell. It currently has an 80GB drive that has been corrupted to death. I want to use it as a slave. I want to transfer music, pics and some files from it. I don't want it to boot up. Is this possible to do without corrupting the new drive? Once this is done, I will then reformatt the 80 gig and put it in another pc. I just want my files (which are not infected) from it.

Yes it is possible to copy all info from the old to the new and the new boot just like nothing happened. Im not sure what free software would be good for this. You will be advised to a few different programs but I use Norton Ghost for this. You will need a floppy handy.

The only concern is you said it was corrupt. In what way is it? If it is only software corupption then all of that will copy to the new drive and you still have all the same problems your trying to get rid of.

The way your talking here it would be better off to just start the new drive from scratch. Yes you may be looking at hours to get the new drive where the old one is but your install would be cleaner.

I'm just looking to pull the music, pics and files from the old drive. I have all the software for them and they're all free from corruption, of course, so I can load them to the new drive. So again, this is ok to do right!

It is what I would do If my OS became seriously curropt. Even if it meant redoing my exsisting drive.
