is there a program that will allow me to make a copy and rip my DVDs?

Backing up your own DVD's, can almost be too easy. LOL

Try HERE for software suggestions and guides on how to use them.
Remember to keep the burning speed low and the blank quality high, and you'll be home and hosed.

but some of my DVDs say they are protected, how do i get around this?

To get past that situation, you need a RIPPER, that will Rip the files to your HDD. At this point your almost there. Next comes the software to transcode these files. This kind of software, like DVD Shrink will "convert" the files so that your burning software can burn them to a blank DVD.
