Fluctuating Buffer Level.....on an SATA drive...

I know there are multiple threads about this problem, but most I have read deal with IDE drives....
I am using Nero 6, with a newly replaced LG GSA-H62N DVD Writer (as my old NEC decided to die on me)...the difference being that it is a SATA drive...hooked as my Secondary Master as my HDD is my primary master...
and now when I burn DVD's the Buffer Level fluctuates between 98% to as low as 42%, and when burning at 4X, it seems to take 2X...
I also have an IDE CD writer connected which never caused a conflict with my old IDE DVD writer...
While I am happy I am reading and writing DVD's again, no sense having a fast writer if it takes this long...any thoughts?

Use Device Manager and check to see that DMA mode is enabled for the burner. The ATA channels are located under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
Are you using good quality media? Have you tried burning at 8X? Do you have enough free space on your HDD? Is the HDD fragmented?

You might post your NeroHistory log for one of the burns. That might shed some light on problems. Omit your name and Nero serial number from the log section before posting.
N6: Prog Files > Ahead > Nero > NeroHistory

DMA is enabled...Im using Sony DVD-Rs...Ive never had a problem like this with my old drive (which was IDE)...Ill go over everything one more time, burn another DVD and post the log here....thanks!

Here is my latest Nero history log, if it is noted anywhere in it, I did burn 3 DVD's backto back (3 copies)....please let me know what you all find...thanks!

Nero is reporting the DMA as off. Sometimes it gets it wrong especially when RAID controllers are involved, but this would explain the 2X effective burning speed. Make sure you're looking at the port where the burner is installed when you check the DMA. You might want to use Device Manager to uninstall the channel and then let the OS reinstall automatically upon restart.
Your version of Nero is really out of date. I doubt it actually recognizes your burner. :) Also the Sony -R media you're burning is hard for some burners to deal with for whatever reason. You might try some Verbatim just to see if it makes a difference.
Have you tried using ImgBurn (free) to burn your ISOs. I think it's a DMA or other communication channel problem but you could give ImgBurn a whirl. If that works, the likely culprit is an outdated Nero.

I have a copy of Nero7 Ultra that I could use, I just dont like how it works to back up my DVD's (if not, I just dont know how to use it right), think this would help?
also let me explain my setup.
My new LG DVDR drive is a SATA. my BIOS shows my other optical (CDR) as Primary IDE Slave. My main HDD is a SATA (which is read as my primary SATA, the DVDR shows up as secondary)...and my Secondary IDE Slave is my other HDD....should i reconfiguyre something there as well?...
I do understand that DMA should be enabled for optimum burns, but the fact that its connected via SATA, perhaps what I saw was it checking the primary IDE while nothing is connected there....what do you think?

What's listed under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers on your PC?
The hardware on the IDE channels isn't conflicting.
I doubt Nero is the problem although N7 is going to be better than the old copy of Nero Express you have. Just be sure to update to the latest version (7.10.1.0 I think) from Nero.com. I don't use Nero for burning myself, preferring ImgBurn.
If the RAID controller is listed separately in Device Manager, click on it. That's what your burner seems to be connected to. It's probably listed under SCSI and RAID Controllers in Device Manager if you're using WinXP. We've seen problems in the past with burners connected to RAID controllers. There should also be a SiSRAID Utility program under Programs in the Start Menu which should allow you to see the current settings and change them.

Under my device manager for SCSI-RAID controllers, i right-click the entry and come to the SiS 180 Raid Controller...Then under the Property tab, there is Channel 0 which is my Hard Drive, and Channel 1 which is my DVD burner, under there there are these entries....
UDMA Supported = 5 (UDMA 100)
PIO Supported = 4
DMA Supported = 2
Device Current Used = UDMA mode 0
Minor Version = ATA/ATAPI-7
any thoughts now?

I'm not sure why this is set to mode 0. Sometimes, if the device supports it, the OS steps down the DMA mode one step at a time if communication errors occur. Usually though it ends up in PIO mode so I'm not sure what the deal is here. I would think it should be mode 2. Use the SisRAID Utility program and see if you can change the DMA mode to 2.
Was there no Uninstall selection when you right clicked on Channel 1? If there is and you select that and restart the system that should reset the data transfer mode to the default setting. If that is mode 0, then I think you should try setting it to Mode 2 with the utility program.

Whoa, ok now you lost me. I am not able to right click on the Channel 1 option, its like it only shows me the settings, and doesnt let me change it.
This SisRaid Utility you speak of, its on my motherboard CD?...cuz i dont have anything like that installed.
Maybe i should just be resigned to the fact that im burning slower than I could be already.........

...and very weird now, because after doing next to nothing about the problem, the buffer level stays at a consistent 95-98% when burning at 4x....guess problem solved...thanks to all!

I have this drive & not burn @ 18x. Get exceptional quality too.Verbatim & TY 16x rated media used only.
BTW My buffer even @ these speeds stays around 98 <> 100%.
A scan of a disc done recently @ 18x.
