I just got a new cpu and along with it two sticks of Crucial 1 gig DDR2 667 ram. My motherboard has 4 slots for ram, two of them black, and two of them yellow. Does it matter which color slots I installed the two sticks of ram on, or can it make a difference in speed if the ram is in for example; one in black & one in black, one in yellow & one in yellow or one in black & one in yellow?

I think, if you want duel channel, then put one stick in the black, and the other in the black as well. On my mobo, they're both blue, and you put them in the blue slots first.

Put the sticks in the same color, which everone is first.

Thanks for the reply. I'll change the ram up tomorrow when I install my new HD. Just out of curiosity, how much or how little does having the ram on different colors effect the speed of ram and why?

By the sounds of it probably quite alot for you. IF your 2 sticks or ram are identical and IF they can work in dual channel then by putting them both in yellow or both in black they will work in dual channel. This will be a noticeable performance boost.

Say you had for example one stick of 1gb and another of 512mb putting them in the same colour would have no beneficial effect.

Hope that helps!

go with yellow for both sticks (on most motherboards yellow is the first colour you need to fill.)

this will allow the RAM to run in dual channel mode. (good performance boost!)

Only if the sticks are identical.

Thanks for all the information and replies people. Is the general consensus then both identical sticks in yellow (heard a decent amount of people saying black too)? The mobo is an Asus V2-P5945lG Intel Socket T (Lga 775) if that helps.

I know the mobo is an Asus Lga 775--and I can get the exact make and model if it's needed to determine for sure which color the ram sticks should go in.
asus is yellow for sure, and even if you did put them both in black i dont think it would really matter

no problem, by the way if you hear 3 beeps then something is wrong (loose stick of ram. . . . . )

also do a memtest after installing (would have saved me 9 hours if I had done this once)
