hey all ..i would really appreciate any hep on the issue ..my nero just doesnt burn and gives an illegal disc error.

Try running FixVTS on the project before you try to burn or pay for AnyDVD and it should clear things up. Good luck

Your log looks OK..only 2 things I noticed.

These are not top quality discs, try Verbatim or Sony (made in Japan)

I couldn't locate an update for that model# either.Most likely a firmware issue,so you'll have to wait for a future fw update.
Try getting some verbatim.

I returned the TDKs to Circuit City and picked up some Sony DVD+R and will try later tonight - CC does not carry Verbatims. Go figure.
The disk I burned previously do work on my friend's Philips DVD player. My Sony DVD player does seem to accept Sony DVD-R and some others, but not Maxell or TDK - hit or miss at this point. Funny thing is that I visited this site[url=http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm][/url] and they list Sony, TDK and Maxell as being up there with the best, but I could not match the disk codes with anything on the list. Not sure why. I would love to be able to setup a burn and get at least a 90% success rate.
Thanks for your help - got a Nero problem to correct.
BTW - what program do you use to edit content out of your mpg/avi files?

You are very welcome...that list is still a decent rule of thumb though. Stick with Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden and you usually can't go wrong.

Successfully burning discs and getting them to play in all dvd drives are 2 different stories.
If you can't get a disc to burn-which is the illegal disc error,then it's a firmware issue.
Now if you can burn a disc and have different players that will and will not play them,then you got a compatability issue. Sometimes a firmware update can help this situation,but usually comes down to the format and occasionally a certain MID coded media.
There's another route you can go to eliminate this compatability issue.Dvd backups can do some screwy things on players.
Depending on what brand name and model# of your dvd-rw drive,some of them can booktype the plus format to dvd-rom.Benq/Liteon/LG/Plextor are a few. It's called bitsetting. It fools players into thinking that they are playing the original dvd-rom format like that of original dvd movies.
Post back the brand name,model#,and current firmware version and we'll see if your drive has bitsetting capability.

I saw a newer version of videofaq and saw SonyD04 as 1st rate media,which is hogwash. Also the TDK's. Of all the burnlogs I have looked at this year,TDK media was being used on the majority of them.
Sony 1x-8x and 1x-16x are very good,especially the japanese spindle made by taiyo yuden.
Maxell: Very good in the 4x and 8x speed,especially the made in japan Hitachi made maxells. The 16x speed,I'll avoid.
Just gotta figure out the good spindles from the bad spindles-and they'll usually have the same identical price for either. Same goes for fuji,memorex,and most brand named media.

A third possibility is that the disk burns using up about a third of the disk then fails issuing an illegal disc error message - new coaster! In my case, the firmware was fine and the discs were OK but the rip had copyright protection that had to be removed. Not sure if this is the most efficient method, but it worked and I was able to back up my DVD.

Where the heck do you find the SONYD04 code? Where are these codes located on any DVD? I see codes on the inner rim of the DVD but they never match anything on these lists. Also, can you ascertain the code BEFORE buying and opening the DVD spindle?

Here's a free program that'll give you the MID code of your media:

It'll tell you the actual model# and current firmware version..It'll even tell you if your plus format media is booktyped to dvd-rom. It's a very handy program.
Nearly impossible knowing who made your media until you open them up. That why we look on the label for country they were manufactured in for the Made in Japan.

Some of the outside codes can help. Even the bold and itallic numbers on top of the clear top of spindles can help you sort out the better quality media.
Sony used different colored and shapes of styrofoam spacers-the foam things that hold discs in place. The white octogan yielded the taiyo yuden sony's.The spacers that were round/white/,round gray were the non ty sony's. It worked very good,till sony started slapping a label on top of their sealed spindles,thus hiding the spacer. Just have to look for Made in Japan on the outer wrappers for sony and maxell media. The Taiwanese sony are very good,if they are at least 8x.
Tiayo Yuden: After a pack is opened up,there's a code on the bottom of disc,near the inner hub. Gotta have some bright light.Started with TT,TG,or GG and had 6 numbers following it. That's a good way to tell if you got genuine tys or fakes. Mid codes can be faked.

If you get a burn error during the actual burning,it can be a firmware issue,crap media-bad batch,bad disc,burning too fast/burning too slow,or your burner doesn't like it. Firmware update may help the writing strategy. Encryption usually doesn't affect the burning,mainly the ripping stage.

So, am I wasting my time running FixVST on my projects before burning? I found that this reduced the number of failures I was getting. Just a coincidence?

I don't know about that. I only rip dvd onto dvd. Ripping with dvd shrink,sometimes enabling anydvd,and autoburn with nero.
