I have a laptop with half a gig of memory and i've had it for 3 monthes now. The CPU usage has always been at a steady 2-10% without any hardcore processes like games. But i wasn't doing anything on the laptop and all of a sudden the CPU usage was at like 80-100% and i wasn't doing anything. Then after like 10 minutes it went back to normal. Also, about 20 minutes before that when i opened my laptop it was randomly sleeping, and i disabled the feature that makes the laptop sleep when you close the lid before it happened. I want answers to both these questions, all though i really doubt it's a big deal, but should i be worried? Thanks.

Well I'm not sure about the second question, but as for the CPU usage problem, it could be a malware infection. When the status light is going crazy (to indicate it is doing something, even know its just sitting there), try opening up taskmanager (ctrl, alt delete) and then click on the processes tab, then sort them by the CPU usage. Tell me what process is taking up all of it.

Also, how many processes have you got running? Try to stay under 50.

Yah well it hasn't gone crazy since the first time it happened. And i'm running 60 processes, dwm.exe is first, then firefox and igfxsrc, explorer.exe. And also the second problem hasen't occured again, so i don't know what that was about.

Yes, you can disable dwm.exe. What is the rating on your processor?

What do you mean, like the speed? It's at 1.6ghz but it can go up to 2Ghz.

At full load it is at 2 Ghz right? That means it's a 2 GHz processor. Try re-installing windows(if you are like me you have all your data backed up so it should only take about 40 mins), that way you can rule out malware.

Well i recently did a system scan using norton and it was fine except for a tracking cookie which i took care of. Once i disabled dwm.exe it kept on coming back, but i disabled it like 5 times and now it hasn't come back yet, but it probably will when i restart my computer. At first when it was disabled the cpu was up at 50% which was akward but 5 minutes later it's at a steady 0-4% instead of What used to be 2-8%. Also now i'm using like 550 mb of ram instead of like 625. So will this even make a difference?

Well, next time you get a big spike in your CPU usage, try to open up tskmgr and tell us what process is causing the fuss.

Also, you need to delete dwm.exe from the startup list. I think vista has system config utility, but if not, you can get Winpatrol, which is free (I use it, works great) and it will let you view your startup entries and delete/add them.

Ok now the cpu just goes up and down so it's pretty much normal ecen when i disabled dwm.exe. The wierd thing is once i disabled it i'm experiencing extreme lag in video, even YOUTUBE! Do i have to open dwm.exe again, because i don't mind it didn't make a big difference once i disabled it and it does make the windows look a little cooler. Thanks

Well i restarted my compute and dwm was back again and it's taking up the most cpu. For the first 5 mins after restart it was high but that's usually normal. Anyways videos are still not playing they lag very badly. I guess it's not buffering, how can i solve this, it started doing this after i disabled dwm but even after i restarted my computer it's still doing it. I tried it on Mozilla and IE and it still lags, but the webpages load at normal speeds!

Nevermind turns out my isp is having problems in my area so fortunately this isn't related to my cpu. And as far as that goes it has remained steady for a while which is good. Thanks for all the help and i'll notify you if it spikes again.
