so heres the story,
i just bought radeon x1650 pro agp, installled it updated my via chipset drivers, and no luck windows will not give it a standard VGA driver, this is driving me insane...i have a k8v mx/s motherboard,and i can install the ATI display drivers seperately, but the card does not perform good and things seem ''choppy'' the instructions say that windows should detect it and install a standard vga driver so i can proceed with the ATI catalyst or omega stuff...please im really at my wits end...what should I do/

Yes, the Radeon drivers you get from the ATi site are 80% of the time rubbish. I have an ATi card, and experieanced that for a while. I fixed it by getting the Omega drivers, which are tweaked versions of the "official" drivers from ATi's web site.

Can you see if windows will automatically install one, by going into the device manager?
Go to 'update driver' and 'search automatically' and see if it finds one.

Oh,I get that when I first installed them. heres how to make it work:
- Get the newest Omega Drivers from www.omegadrivers.net
-- Run driver/install
-- After fails, right click on desktop, and select Properties
-- Go to Settings, then Advanced
-- Click on Adapter tab, you should see your Adapter type (e.g. RADEON X1950XT Series)
-- Click on Properties button
-- Click on Driver tab
-- Click on Update Driver... button
-- Click on "No, not this time" button (to bypass Hardware Wizard searching the web)
-- Click Next
-- Click on "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" button
-- Click Next
-- Click on "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install" button
-- Click Next
-- Click on Have Disk...
-- Click Browse...
-- Navigate to the location where ATI installed the driver files. For example, for me they reside in C:\Program Files\Radeon Omega Drivers\v3.8.360\2KXP_INF\CX2K_RAD_OMEGA
-- Select the file.
-- Click Open
-- Click Ok
(The next part is a little confusing, but seemed to work for me)
A dialog comes up with a huge list of drivers. I Navigated until I found the RADEON X1950XT.
-- Click Next
At this point a driver warning dialog popped up that recommended against installing the driver because Windows could not verify it, but I threw caution to the wind and installed it anyway
-- Click Finish
* * * Whew * * * that was painful.
Then, let Windows reboot your pc, and when it starts up again, log on. It may take up to 30 seconds for the driver to finish "refreshing", as the screen may turn on and off a couple of times, just wait, that is normal.

ok, first of all THANK YOU for the instructions! I followed them it ''worked'' but the real problem is that windows will not install a Standard VGA driver to begin with, which is why im still experiencing un-optimized video and it seems ''choppy'' gameplay not as smooth as even my old 9600 please help me get windows to detect this card...and then i can follow Waymon3X6's instructions, because yes i can get the omega drivers installed and working but, for example some of the problems i have now are choppy gameplay, whenever windows media player [or classic] there are green lines that go across the screen for less than a split second...and then the movie proceeds ''fine''...some people on another forum said that i need to have windows detect and install a standard vga driver first and then install the omega drivers..
please help some more,

now [after omega drivers are installed] yes, before, windows fails to install a standard vga driver and it uses vga-save instead

I've never had that problem with my ATi card. An X1800XT 256MB. And before that an X850XT, and before that an X800GTO.
That seems strange as I have never had a single problem with the ATi drivers.
Only problem I've ever had is when I set the slider bar from quality to performance I get a corrupted background for the sky in Far Cry...
Sorry... guess this doesn't contribute much :P

i guess i got it sorted out...i just was expecting a little more ''performance'' out of this new card, i mean the X1650 pro prolly only performs about twice as good as my radeon 9600, so i guess the ''drag the window across the screen and watch the bit un-smoothness'' thing is just because its not a top of the line card...from what ive tested it does perform better in ALL arears than the 9600 or 9800 even...so 'sigh' i wish it was a bit smoother i guess...ah, its not that bad i guess.

For sure. For it's time the 9800 was a badass card. It was the one a lot of people recommended for Half-Life 2, Doom 3, and FarCry.
The only game of those three it couldn't run at max was Doom 3. And that's only because of the "nVidia vs ATi in openGL" issue.

Indeed, I remember that, Doom 3 was one of the last games where it was a big issue I seem to recall. The thing that pees me off most about OpenGL is that you can't alt-tab!

The problem actually cleared up with the Radeon X1000 series.
I remember my X800GTO getting some fairly poor performance in Doom 3 when I first got it. It confused me because my X800GTO out-performed the 6800 GT in every other game. Doom 3 seemed to hate me.
But I never had that problem with my X1800XT... but, eh... I only installed Doom 3 to see how it ran. I beat it once and it got boring.

I've played doom 3 a couple of times (it had a bit of a renaissance when I was able to play it at 2560x1600, versus 1280x1024 like before, the highest my X800 Pro could manage) but the game that keeps me coming back is Doom 2. Indeed, using ports like JDoom and Risen3D, the game's transformed to almost a recent title, and the playability is fantastic given the vast numbers of custom levels available. I also really enjoy the Doom64 total conversion mod.

Still, I've never actually gotten to use the X1650 line. My friend got an X1600Pro for an HTPC but I've never seen them in action.
Sammorris. You have the X1600Pro. How well does it perform? What's it roughly equal to? Supposedly they were a bit weak but I say they were decent. Especially being the first mid-range card in the X1000/7800 generation.
I heard the X1650XT is actually an excellent card. And based on what I've seen in reviews it rivals and even surpasses the 7600GT in a fair number of games; Oblivion and Half-Life 2 included.

PROBLEM SOLVED I REPEAT...PROBLEM ''COMPLETELY'' SOLVED!!! [for 3d-gaming that is] for all you people who want to pull their hair out, don't install/re-install drivers a million times like i did, try simply enabling, ''always on'' ''wait for vertical refresh'' now, i dont have that problem of the ''liney,choppy,'' thing on some textures COMPLETELY cleared it up...and i thought it was a motherboard issue...ha, so simple to fix...and i loved the feeling of fixing it...finally...
now the card is performing like a x1650 pro should, [mind you, my setup is athlon 64 3400, 2 gig 400mhz ram, and SBAUD2plat.pro]

That choppy line on textures is called horizontal tearing. It happens when your framerate exceeds the refresh rate of your monitor. It is EXTREMELY common. And it is completely harmless.
:EDIT:
Try installing FRAPS and seeing what frames you get with vertical refresh on AND off. And compare.
If you perform roughly the same with both then your choppy gameplay was actually just harmless horizontal tearing.
If the card is fast enough you might have your framerate locked at 60,70,75 or whatever your monitor's refresh rate is. This is because it was actually rendering faster than your monitor and the "wait for vertical refresh" command prevents it from going higher than your refresh rate.
And now that I look further up you said you had green lines in windows media player briefly before starting a movie. Sometimes this is just a quirk with the drivers. Or it could just be an anomaly. Unless this gives you problems I would think you are safe to ignore it.

OK, will do! and another thing, today i got a virus/trojan that started to ''patch'' my programs so that i would have to re-install them... lucky enogh avg internet security, cought it before it did any real damage, and i only had 2 reinstall the keyboard software...
anyway you just can't use the internet, im firewalled, avg updated, spyware blaster, etc...using the internet for even just a bit Freaks me out...

I don't worry too much. My firewall is Comodo Firewall Pro and my anti-virus is AVG Free and I stay perfectly clean most of the time.
Every once-in-a-while my virus scan picks up some random bug. But it scans once every day so I don't worry.
I've never had a really bad trojan but I've had my dad get into the naughty sites :O and get a desktop hijack AND a browser hijack...
Luckily he doesn't use either of my computers :P

even though my computer is techically outdated, im actually getting really good framerates on all my games in 1028x rez...so, yeah UT2004 is running like quake 3 now, and thats all maxxed out...yep im happy...for what i game, and do, my setup is really good for me... might have to d/l comodo dragon or whatever its called...
