The X1600 Pro seemed pretty wimp, but I've not played many games with my server so I don't really care, it was the cheapest graphics card I could find that supported my monitor and didn't steal system memory.

I could say though, that only having 4 pixel pipes(physical ROPs) did kinda kill the X1600Pro for the most part.

Whereas the X1650XT has (supposedly) 24 pixel pipes. 12 physical with 2 shader units per pipe I believe. And it performs like it. Easily matches the 7600GT and beats it out in shader-heavy games like Half-Life 2, FEAR, and Oblivion.

speaking of which I've been playing FEAR again, unfortunately my card can't quite run it at max on 2048x1536. I've turned everything to max but turned softshadows off and gone with Trilinear filtering. That earns me around 25-45fps for the most part, certain scenes drop down to around 18 though, not too great. Then again, Anti-aliasing is on 4x.

I've never been a fan of soft shadows because of the performance drops it causes. Only now with the 8800GTX have I started using it and it DOES look good. But I think it could have been optimised better. Seeing as FEAR came out during the early months of the GeForce 7 generation.

What doesn't make sense is that the 7 series cards can handle the game at insane resolutions with AA + AF, but they just can't pull it off with soft shadows.

Take shadow filtering in Oblivion for instance. That IS soft shadows and it DOES NOT have as huge a performance hit as soft shadows in FEAR.

I bet you can handle Oblivion fairly well in 1280 x 1024 with everything maxed out. Some also introduce the arguement that Oblivion doesn't handle hi-res as well as FEAR. But I have to argue with the fact that Oblivion also introduces detail, view distance, and shaders to MUCH greater extent so much so that Oblivion is the better looking game BY FAR.

So while FEAR is truly a ground-breaker for when it was released, it was quickly overshadowed within its own lifetime.

But, now I might start to wander in my comparison so I'll leave it there.

And just for the record. My 8800GTX handles FEAR at 1920 x 1200, 8x AA, 16x AF. I average in the high 60s with drops to the 30s when I'm having fun with the bullet time(making everything explode into dust in slo-mo).

And I handle Oblivion at max settings with HDR. 1920 x 1200, 50-60FPS average in the dense foliage, mid 70s in towns, well over 200 indoors.

If you wanna trade monitors I'd be more than happy :P

Actually I disagree. FEAR looks admirable leaving it at stock. Oblivion looks awful outside unless you download a custom patch to correct the texture resolution. stock, FEAR is the better looking game. Oblivion has more capability, but I think the lighting and shadow effects are better in FEAR, they just have grey settings compared to the lush worlds in oblivion that look crap because the outdoor texture resolution is 640x480 (I mean, honestly).

I think this becomes a matter of opinion.

I think Oblivion is the better looking game overall. But, yes, FEAR is definitely the sharper looking game. Textures and environment models are better but I'll have to disagree in lighting. HDR in Oblivion is just amazing.

I'd also have to put the character models about even. Oblivion and FEAR both give pretty similar poly counts for models and they both look equally good.

Oblivion beats out FEAR in eye candy though. The foliage and environments are incredible and varied... FEAR... factories and offices.

Textures in Oblivion leave a lot to be desired. But they are such that they are passable, given the sheer detail in the environments.

Maybe it's just me(definitely), but I tend to lean more towards RPG's and first-person adventures over shooters. But my favorite shooter remains, to this day, Half-Life 2.

I'll respect your opinion, and you respect mine, eh? :P

Agreed, especially since I prefer FPS games. I played through the entire Quake 4 campaign yesterday, after having got a gaming fix from doing FEAR. Looks pretty shiny, but I'd say FEAR is the better looking game.

Rightly so. FEAR is using a much more advanced engine and is a fair bit newer.

The engine is newer by a fair bit anyways. Monolith vs Doom 3

EDIT:

lol, that'll show me to spout random jargon >.<
