hi everyone who can help' just wondered what anyone thought would be a good agp card for my system. also looking for more memory. i currently have the ati 9250se agp card which does not perform well at all. i have to play games like fear and far cry on the minimal setting so that i get no lag. my current setup is intel celeron 2.93 processor, ati agp radeon 256mb 9250 se video card, 1 gig memory '2'512'. ideas would be appreciated. thanks mike. i would also like to know if i shoud go to 2gigs or 3 gigs.

You'll be fine with 2 gigs, 3 is not really needed right now.

Well, the Celeron isn't going to give you very good performance either way. So I don't suggest getting very powerful video.
But you would do well with a 7600GS AGP or and X1650Pro AGP. Any higher and you're wasting money.

would i be better off just upgraging my mb since it's just a intel d865 perl that does not even let you oc and get a new processor and then video card? much more money but if i can get performence this way sounds like the only option. i want to be able to play my current and future games wide open if possible. any more ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance. mike

Well, if you want high-performance gaming, yes, I would say do an overhaul and get a new motherboard, processor, RAM, video, and a PSU(power supply unit).
Seems like a hell of a lot of money but it can be done for relatively little.
And if it comes to that you can ask me or my buddy sammorris on how to get that together :P

hey estuansis, i think i really want to completely overhaul and got the wifes ok (he he he). if you have any god suggestions on brands, quanities and where to order things it would be great. i put my current pc together from scratch so i know pretty much what im doing but will have some questions. thanks for your help so far. mike

Well go with a Core 2 Duo and pick an inexpensive model and you can overclock to to a MUCH higher speed, oh and the Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 is a pretty good mobo to get.

None taken, I was just kidding. I prefer the Gigabyte board as well(I guess you might say I MAY be biased towards it). I also have Crucial Ballistix Tracer memory and that works awesome.

Actually, before I got my 680i I was reluctant to part with my Gigabyte. It is a kick-ass board for budget overclocking and mid-range gamer builds. But I wanted the solid rep of the 680i for overclocking. I have my e6600 at 3.4GHz which I just didn't feel safe with on my Gigabyte :P

I originally payed $95 at newegg. Then after mine blew(capacitor) I just bought the v1.33 board because the prices on the original went up again.
I finally dumped it for my 680i, which, I'll have to admit, is a bit better.

i guess i do not understand the difference in the versions you talk of with the gigabyte mb. also estuansis could you give or tell me a link of your board so i could compare. i'm still undecided on the mb and the processor. i guess i dont know if i should go higher on the cpu like the e6600 or higher or if the one you recommond is plenty for me. i do know when i get the mb i'll probaley get 4 gigs of the ballistic if that's not being wasteful in your opinion, for the price it's a great deal. thanks again, mike

get 2 gigs of ram as windows has problems reading past 3 gigs from what i've read on this site & that includes vista.

thanks ddp, i'll stick with getting just 2 gigs. i was talking with a friend and he said anything over 2 gigs right now is just a waste. do you know why xp has these problems reading over 2 gigs, just curious never have heard this. thanks for the input, mike

I think this is a very good board. One of the best. And if you truly want some power in your build the E6600 is an awesome option. It is currently my processor of choice.
But if you want really high-end gaming I would suggest one of these:

But the X1950Pro I linked to in my previous post should be more than enough for a while still. It should at least handle Crysis at close to max settings. I believe one of the developers said he was running close to max with an X1900XT on the yet unoptimized game.

I would go with the E6600 and the Gigabyte DS3 board or the one Estuanis linked to. The DS3 is a little bit cheaper and is still a VERY good performing board.

hi all, i decided to go with the e6600 core 2 duo at pricegrabber for a good price of 199.00. i did notice today that it's now 220.00 at pricegrabber(nice snag i think). i will check out the link you left estuansis and hope i can make a choice then on the mb. still unsure also on the video card want to be able to play at high performence for a while. i am going to look at the ati(visiontek)radeon 2600xt 512mb pci express card. please tell me what you think of this one. thanks again, mike
