It looks like the "+R" camp is winning the battle. The forum has just announced a 8.5GB disc.
Checkout more details here :- http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/54/33733.html
Not long now before no more re-encoding folks, just rip and burn baby, just rip and burn.....

Its a biased report. It is not from the forum, but from the DVD+R alliance, who you would expect to say something like that. Dual layer DVD-R is on its way too, and its supported by the forum. However, as i always say, its all irrelevant when HD DVD is on its way at a competitive price within a year ;-)

I think my choice of the word "forum" was not good !!
Perhaps "Camp" might have been better (lol).
I think I'm going to have to stick with my DVD-R (X1 burner) for just a bit longer....

Well spotted steeldude, I guess it was amiss of me to think that the DVD-R camp wern't also working on a larger capacity.
Looks like DVDShrink is going to have a short lifespan (lol)

It hasn't been that long but I think most of us knew this day would arrive.....
Still it does highlight the fact of new generation technology being available to us consumers.....
The battle will be fierce between -r and +r..and should continue to push the boundaries......who will win, and who will be the weakest link........
I have to say, personally I do think +r will superceed the -r......reason, from what I hear and read.....more innovation seems to be injected towards the +r than the -r...
The -r seems to be VERY directed at the consumer market.......and +r in a more professional capacity but innovation is where the money lies AND NOT the invention.....
I can see the expense being quite high, as there will probably be only a few companies (initially supporting it), until the consumers demand increases.........
Nice one HomerJ and steeldude for posting this info.......I shall be keeping my eyes open now.....
......I hope Mr Van Den Berg is gonna provide an update to increase my overall file size, when those babies hit the streets.....LOL

Well I Think what sucks about this New Technology is that the Burners that we all have now will not be able to burn these Disks so we will Have to Go and get a whole new DVD Burner...

People,
The world we live in is constantly evolving, we should not expect it to stand still.
Sure, in the next few years, we MAY have to upgrade, but may not.
Don't panic !!
Your current hardware will serve you well for the next few years, and you will get good value for money !! (assuming you actually use it)
However, you may get jealous, and want new technology, at which point the choice is yours.
But hey, that's the way of the world !!!
Enjoy what you have, and upgrade if you feel it's really necessary.

Here here.....
Yes it is a shame new technology is not cross compatible....but that is the market....
The OEM's want to be the first to the post....so when one is designing, the others get wind of it and usually join the party...
The $ going into research is BETTER spent developing new technology than having to develop new technology AND implementing it with old technology.....
This would slow up the process, therefore it is easier to develop newer tech.......
But yes, personally I think an OEM WOULD receive lots of praise, if they could develop cross compatible technology....I think it is generally seen as 'going backwards' than forwards....
Just be happy that you've now mastered the 4.7Gb technology.......this will give you more of a platform to leap into the new technology with confidence.........
The choice will always be yours to go with technology or lag it for a while......
Some people go with it, and upgrade at the first oppurtunity.......usually costing them lots....
Personally I have a look into it, see what others think, collate the neccessary info and decide if it will accomplish what I require......if it does then the wallet opens up and those notes do the talking.........otherwise I stick with what works best for me and keep searching.....

The problem is by the time we get dual layer all the disks will be coming out in this 100Gb blue light thing they are all working on.
The way i look at it is, if it is good today then its still good next week, even if something better is just around the corner.
If they did not want films copied they would not make it so easy!!!

nobbi1977, it is called blu Ray and its set to replace DVD with a normal disc capacity of around 30GB, upto 100GB! It uses a Blue Laser to write onto the media which has a shorter wavelength than Red Lasers, thus more data can be burnt on the disc. The discs themselfs will have protective cases, like DVD-Ram discs now.
All of this new technology will be at consummer level when Duel layer DVD's are just comming out, so DVD will be doomed then for video/film production but still useful for your home photoalbum.
