I want to know how i can play backup NDS roms on my NDS. All i really need are names of products i need to buy to be able to do this, as well as a simple one sentience explanation of what they do. If someone can give me a link to a reliable source to buy them would be awsome as well, but all i really need is what i need to get. Thanks!
There are lots of products available, but the most popular one seems to be the M3 DS Simply also know as the R4. It can play backups easily and has a user friendly interface, as well as multimedia and homebrew capabilities.

I had my M3 bought for me, so I'm not sure where the best place to get them from is. I've had this place suggested a few times though. You should see where other people got theirs from or check out Mr. Hanky's M3 Simply guide near the top of the DS section of the forum, I think there's a list of places that stock them on there.

Pass me, Pass card, No pass and most things named like that are used for the old Slot 2 method. Th M3/R4 doesn't need one of them. They we're used to make the DS think it was booting a slot 1 game, whilst really, it was booting slot 2.thus allowing for roms to be played using a specially made GBA cartridge. Slot 1 (M3/R4) are generaly cheaper and require less equipment.

okay, i think i know what i need to get, tell me if i got this wrong
i buy an R4DS, plug in a MicroSD card to my computer, load up the Cd it came with, drag and drop all he system files to the MicroSD, Put the MicroSd into the R4, and play the Roms i downloaded.
the last question i have is. is the R4 compatible with any MicroSD? I already have a 6gb Sandisk MicroSDHC, do i need to buy a normal MicroSD or will the R4 take the SDHC?
I don't think the R4 works with HC Micro SD cards. I wouldn't get anything smaller than 1GB if you plan on playing roms.

okay, sorry i just thought of something, how much memory do ds games take up?
It depends on the game. They can be around 36mb to 128mb, the average being 64mb. These can be trimmed, to make them smaller. Trimming removes the space for the game to save i think, but the R4 creates its own, so that doesn't matter.
trimming doesnt remove the save area, thats a separate chip on every nds cart.
original nds carts use rom chips of fixed sizes, e.g. 1mb,2mb,8mb,16mb etc. the games themselves use the smalles rom chip that can accomodate them, i.e. a 12mb game will use a 16mb rom.
'clean dumps' use all info from the rom, even if it isnt filled with game data. trimming removes the excess data which is essentially blank and unused.
e.g. the 12mb game will result in a 16mb dump, and trimming it will give you a 12mb file.
