It's to do with the security settings enabled, which you'll have to turn off.

Sorry you've confused me.. What is to do with security settings enabled? What will i have to turn them off for? I wanted to know why my internet explorer doesn't work properly anymore. Are you talking about scanning with that kaspersky? If so i have decided not to do so as it isn't going to help me with my problem and both of my spyware programs are telling me i have no risks.. Thanks.

I can only assume there's some settings in Kaspersky that control what your browsers are allowed to do.

Kaspersky didnt install mirar! Google mirar and read how it works, it installs a toolbar when it has the chance, ie, your resident AV being disabled. If I was you I'd complete the kaspersky scan, but if you don't think you have any problems relating to mirar now it's up to you.

As for the power options, wait for packard bell I suppose?

I'm not saying kaspersky installed mirar but it has instigated the whole problem with my hotmail as it was fine before hand. I really do not feel comfortable scanning with it again as i'll have to turn off my AV then who knows what more problems will arise.. I did follow the steps you advised and i found no traces to mirar on my system.. Do you believe that it is this mirar which is causing me not to be able to open links from my hotmail??

Can you go into ie tools>options (internet options) and go to the security tab. What level is the vertical slider at? If it's at high or custom try moving it down to medium and checking if you still can't use links from your mail, if not, move it down to medium-low. I'm not saying you should leave the settings like this, although they will probably be ok like that, but this will tell if the problem you are having with links is due to your browsers security settings.

Yeah i had checked that but it was on medium high already. I tried medium to no affect.. I think it might be something to do with my hotmail not loading properly because along the bottom instead of saying "Done" like it normally does it says "waiting for http://rad.msn..etc..".

Hi, im having the same problem as "myf" with the laptop and standby options and it just recently happened about a week or two ago. I havent been able to fix it, but i was wondering if it could be a possible update from microsoft or other program that has disabled these options.

Just wondering if you still have problems with your laptop not going into standby. I just started fooling around with things they said to do and then my computer said to restart system for changes to work and then it was back working.

I'm not totally sure, but i think it was one of the drivers being unsigned. network adapters --> National semiconductor DP83815. Basically once i signed this driver it had a lot of information about power management and i think is the reason why I'm able to use hibernate or standby now.

Possibly, if it works, I'll make a note of that for future reference.

Hi, what is the exact model of your notebook?

When you shutdown the unit, the last windows screen has three icons... standby, turn off and restart. Are they all lit or is one missing or grayed out?

Hi myf, right click my computer and go to properties, then go to the hardware tab and click the device manager button. Click view and "show hidden devices", now look for anything with a yellow exclaimation mark or a red cross symbol next to it, some of these may be normal for your system so don't get too excited if you see any. In particular check if you have any exclaimations or crosses next to anything in the "system devices" branch, especially anything to do with "ACPI".

Please post back telling us any and all items that have the exclaimation or the red cross. Any branches that contain any items that have either of these will be expanded already so you don't have to go clicking the + next to all of them to find them, just be sure to go view, show hidden devices first.

Also, go to windows update, from Internet explorer click tools, windows update, update everything available.

I'm not sure if this will work for you, but I'm 99% sure it is how i fixed my problem.
Open up your device manager, maximize "Network Adapters" and see if your PCI driver is signed.
I also had to download the latest update of the PCI driver from my laptops website. (i think the HP site for that is http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html )

Oh my god!! It's fixed.. Thanks LDee! I had looked in my device manager lots but only was really looking for the yellow exclamation mark so when you suggested i click view and "show hidden devices" it made me look more closely at everything.. Anyway, under display adapters i had 2 items which looked exactly the same.. They were graphics controllers.. The top one had a really small red x on it. I had noticed this before but because the graphics controller underneath was exactly the same with no red x i just ignored it.. I feel a complete idiot now. When i opened both of them one said function 0 and one said function 1. So i enabled the one that was disabled then i was prompted to install new hardware and restart.. Then hey presto all my standby functions are back i even have a hibernate tab in my power management. I am so sorry for being so stupid. Thanks to everyone for their help.. Especially LDee.

I'm very glad it's finally fixed. Don't apologize, how would you have known you should have checked the hidden devices too? We should have thought of that sooner to be honest so I've learned a lesson.
