How many burns are possible with single DVD writer? Will it last for 1000, 10.000 or 100.000 burns?
I'm wondering what the "real" cost of burning a DVD-R is.
If the writer last's for 10.000+ then I'll probably get newer model anyway.
Has anoyone made a burn-out?

Every thing wears out but you will have purchased new drives long before it does. unless you are a market trader selling 500 films per weekend!!!
If they did not want films copied they would not make it so easy!!!

Hmmm, right, i know, but this is not "accepted" answr.
Will it last for 1000, 10.000 or 100.000 burns?
I'm realy wondering how many burns it will last for...
"unless you are a market trader selling 500 films per weekend!!!"
-- This is "only" 26.000 disks per year.. It is possible to burn up to 672 disk's a week, if they are burnt @4x - in 15minutes.. So 500 is realy about maximum burns for a one week, so about 25.000 is a maximum for a one year... How many years will it then last?
How much will the laser wear out with time, it will wear out, but I'm interested in how many 100% quality disks it is possible to burn with a one set of a good burner, let's say Pioneer?

25,000 disks in one year on a £150 Burner, if the burner fails after one year it has added 0.006p to each disk burned.
Also who cares!!!!!!!!!!!! must cost more than that to plug the Bl**dy comp in

Thank you for a REAL reply
Can you estimate how many DVD's you did burn with your writer before it did wear out?
Did the quality of the later disk's differ from the first one?

Hi antons
In the 12volt world, the life span of a car CD player laser is around 4 years under normal use. The cheapies have a shorter life span and the better units are suppost to last longer. Heat is the enemy on life span. To much burning with limited air circulation could cause the early demise of the burner. I think it is safe to say a burner should last somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 burns give or take a coaster

Frankly, this is an eminently sensible question; and like most [sensible questions] raises far more wider and deeper issues than its face value.
Indeed it raises a fundamental philosophical ponderment of deeply held values - which we all know some, nay many, people are prepared to die for.
Outwith the damning indictment of market traders - surely an honest shopkeep plying his/her trade is not merely concerned with the illegitimacy of their dvd cache? I nevertheless feel that the true nature of a dvd burner and its longevity is, ifn you will, an extended metaphor of life itself in the cosmos. We each of us have a different mortal span, based on gene pool, accidents and dare I sayit kismet, so how would it be possible to enter into a mnathematical treatise on how long a burner would last. Too many variables, non?
What is life anyway except a few successes here and there with difficult burns, learning proggies in order to beat the manufacturer and an all too brief moment of pleasure watching the damn thing.
There, I hope that clears things up for y'all.
Ol Hectar
