I have the same issue with W2K pro... It used to work well then it stopped working but I can't pinpoint what changed in order to cause this... I know that there is no IMAPI service or burning service in W2K pro?
any suggestions?
Try not... Do or do not!

I've had the same issue with my NEC 1300 on Windows 98SE. Tried to re-install Nero without success.
The issue was fixed by re-installing Windows ASPI driver (not Nero).
I made a page about this...
http://hem.passagen.se/anst5037/nec nd-2500a drive is in use by another application.htm
The fault was the aspilayer.

I'm having the same problem with my SONY CD-RW CRX160 E Drive. When I try and burn a CD with Nero it comes back with "Drive in use by another application" also. I have already went into my services. Another way you can do this is by clicking Start, then Run, type services.msc, then choose IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service. I tried each variation of settings. I've Enabled, Disabled, and set it to Automatic. None of these worked.
I found a new problem also. When I tried to burn these using XP (right click the file and sending it to F drive) it instructs me to insert a writable disk and press next. When I insert the disk and press next it doesn't respond.
Any Suggestions?

I changed the aspi layer. Look at the link to the page I made, it solved my problems by changing to another layer, no more problem with the drive

Hope this thread is'nt dead yet
This "drive in use"-thing" in Nero drives me crazy on my NEC.
The problem just started like that.
Killed the Imapi but still no results.
Re-installing the Aspi drivers under XP how does one do that?

no, ASPI doesn't mean SCSI, my 1300 isn't SCSI either and reinstalling ASPI drivers helped.

The "In use is gone
Thanks
That's an improvement.
Nero got to about 8 percent simulating, then crashed.
I reinstalled XP (yech)very instable this Shuttle.
After this I read your aspi hint and I ran ForceASPI.
Well this got Nero to 16 percent and then it hung.
Great (ings)Lex

Well, may be it's time to try another OS? :)
On the other hand... are you sure it really hang? I am serious, I've seen Ulead DVD Workshop hanging once after a quarter of the disk, but it was left like that for some time, and to my surprise recording has finished successfully...

I have the same problem as listed here. I am running XP and have just installed Nero6. I had tried to install Adaptec burning software first but the release I had did not support XP. I first ran into a problem that the cd rom drive did not show up at all. I fixed that by deleting the entries in the registry. Now I installed Nero6 and everything went fine. Now when I try to burn something it fails stating that "Drive is in use by another application". I tried the circumvention listed above but it was already stopped. Any other idea? Is it ok to use that force ASPI on XP? Thanks again....

Well stripped all the Nero Stuff with their tools.
Tried to flash the Nec's firmware (it is 1.06), the utility gives a flash error, so there is definitely something wrong in the communication, way under. The only program that has a driver active in that area now would be 'Elaborate Bytes' Clone DVD.

Well here is for the good news.
Somehow I remembered reading something about de DMA and the Nec.
The Suttle motherboard supports ultra dma 2 and it seems that the Nec is not very fond of it.
After changing the hardware settings I was able to flush the firmware AND burn a DVD..............!!!!!
two weeks and a lot of discs lost on this.
Thanks for your help

Ok, I've found about 4 different websites to download the updated ASPI layer, or FOrce ASPI. The problem is every time I click to download the file it tells me I'm not authorized to view the page. Any help would be appreciated. Its really getting to be a pain in the but to have to start my computer in safe mode just to burn a DVD. Thanks for any input.

I went to the following
1 control panel\administrative tools\services\imapi cd burning - double click - disable start up type - then go to LOG ON and disable it in your hardware profilr - Profile 1.
Mine works fine - I have a combination dvd/cd writer.
