This is a very simple and straight question:
Does, upgrading firmware, give any benefit at all?
If so: what kind of enhancements can we expect?

Yes it does. Except fixing some bugs and supporting more media especially for this drive you should get the hacked firmware which unlocks DVD ripping speed from 2x to 12x, supports 2x media that Pioneer does not support and is region free.

If you have this drive and you have good results using your favorite media (I stick to one type,Riteks) then don't upgrade your firmware.If your upgrading to be able to rip with it,consider the cost factor,a DVD-rom is around $35-45 and your recorder cost quite a bit more, the wear and tear of using you recorder for both tasks is worth the investment into a separate rom,to prolong the recorders longivity, just my opinion though. I agree with you, karatone. It's too risky to upgrade to a new firmware just to be able to rip faster. As for media compatibility I can not complain at all. My Pioneer A06 can handle whatever you throw at it.
For ripping I am using a Samsnug DVD_ROM SD616Q. In this case I wouldn't mind to try and upgrade firmware in order to get a bit more ripping speed.

As for me I don't really care on the "wear and tear" issue. If i could rip at a faster speed it's worth upgrading to a hack firmware. By the time my drive fail from ripping and burning, then it's time to upgrade to a faster and more advance drive.
Acer 800Lci notebook 1.3 Ghz Pentium M, 512Mb DDR ram. Pioneer DVR-106D USB External.

I upgraded my firmware and wanted to increase my drive speed using DVD-ROM Utility for Windows. When i went to the speed control utility it had a drop down menue and asked me to choose target drive. nothing dropped down when I clicked the dropdown button and I am not sure how exactly to type in my drive target location. any help?

Well if you have upgraded to the hacked firmware the Pioneer DVD ROM utility may not recognise it. What drive do you have?

Well this USB thing is probably the problem. I never had a USB drive to check it out, so someone else must help!

I just got the Pioneer 106A and finding it is reading dvd-rw's and cd-r's much slower than the rated speed. It will only read the dvd-rw's a 2X with a burst of 2X and the cd-r's are being read at about 18-20 instead of the stated 32. I checked the intel acceleration utility and it said the drive was at the top speed setting. What else could be causing the problem? I'm using the Nero speed check utility for my stats. Thank you.

I have a Pioneer A05 dvd-r burner. I have had it for about a year. I installed it, everything was working fine and now all of a sudden it's not in my comupter folder. I uninstalled and installed it. I have updated it. I have tried everything. Does anyone have any ideas?
