I may have missed something here at AfterDawn on this topic. I prefer movies from the 30s - 50s, but almost all are mono or a few are stereo. Is there a way to convert the sound track to simulate 5.1 sound? Did I miss a guide here?

The easiest way is to use the 'Surround Simulator' (or whatever it's called) built into your home theater amp. Barring that, you're in for a lot of audio editing involving phase shifting, parametric equalizing, reverb and delays, etc.

Best you will get is pseudo surround. You will have to use a software & some VST plug-in effect to create this. However, the result will just be stereo or mono coming out of 6 speakers.

When I did this sort of thing, I used SoundForge + Sony Vegas. Sony Vegas alone can do it, but I liked SoundForge more for using the VST plug-in effect. Maybe the free alternative is Audacity + Besweet?

I have both digital and analog audio running to my 5.1 receiver. In cases of mono soundtracks I choose analog and use one of the many sound fields that are available. These sound fields are not available for me when the digital outputs are used.
