Convert .vob to .avi

Hi, after ripping the content out of a dvd, i get these .vob files along with a few others. I can play the .vob files through vlc but i rather watch in windows media player and converted to .avi. So my first question is: what is the best way to covert the video content of the dvd into 1 single .avi file.
Here are a couple of side notes:
When ripping it out of the dvd, i get multiple .vob files, i can convert each one into .avi but i want it all in a single file. I use WinAVI to convert it into avi. I was going to use VirtualDub to fuse them all together without having to re-encode everything but Virtualdub doesn't except this type of format. So i tried dropping it into Sony Vegas but it didn't show up either. So my second question is: what type of codec should i use to encode the video? It is currently set to ZjMedia MPEG-4 Encoder.

If you rip from DVD to HDD with DVD Decrypter (free)you can choose to rip as one .vob file. On my Vista set up, it's faster than using the explorer file copy feature.

yea but i already paid for WinAVI, and i can export it to avi, the problem is, i'm using Zjmedia Mpeg-4 encoder so the final avi product is not being accepted into VirtualDub so i can combine it with the other videos, nor is it being accepted in Sony Vegas. So which codec should i use to encode the video?

Can AutoGK fuse together two videos with the same parameters of audio and video streams?
For example, I can use VirtualDub if:
Videostreams: the same width, height, fps, codec.
Audiostreams: the same sampling rate, codec and bitrate.
Then I open the 1st file in VirtualDub,
Then go to "File" - "Append AVI segment..." and open the second one. It will be added to the end of previous one.
Then choose "Video" - "Direct stream copy", so there will be no re-encoding.
Then press F7 and save to a new video file.
Could anyone provide me a similar set of instruction for whatever program you recommend?

KungFuGod,
To convert to AVI format with winavi, I usually select "Divx" or "Xvid" as the encoder.
Btw, actually, winavi can convert multi files into one single one if you select "Merge into one file" before the conversion.

Well, why don't you use VirtaulDub to append the segments and THEN use AutoGK?
BTW, be aware that "bumping" is against the forum rules. :)

oh sorry, wans't away bumping was against the rules, sorry about that.
Well for the time being, i would like to use the softwares that i currently have rather than download and lean a new one like all those listed above. skyhaha mentioned winavi can convert multi files into one single one if you select "Merge into one file" before the conversion.I would like to know how to do this function.

I believe you can "batch" convert anyway, which is converting multiple files simultaneously into one output file(s).

easy as can be, when you start winavi. Do following
1. press avi button ( the explorer box open up)
2. browse to where your vob's are, pick the first vob then holding the shift key move the mouse till all the vob's are choosen.
3. when your back in winavi with all your vob's, look at there position, sometimes they might not be in order (example vob3 before vob1 etc). Use the arrows to the right to move files to the correct position.
4. The default is to automatically merge all your files together, press start to begin.
Note: Winavi is very good at converting normal mpeg1/mpeg2s to avi, but when I have used it to convert vob's to avi I usually get audio sync problems.
If you have audio sync problems, my recommendation is get Dr.Divx 2.0 (which is free) that works very good on vob's and produces near dvd quality output. I use that to convert vob's.

Ah very nice, thanks for the tip. I have one question though, when joining it together through winavi, the final .avi file has a small video jump between each .vob files. Is there any way to fix it?
Also, which video codec do you guys ususally use when using winavi? I'm currently on ZjMedia Mepeg-4 Encoder by default.

Here is what i use, after I have my vob files, I use Allok MPEG4 converter. Once i have the individual avi files with xvid codec I use their avi fast joiner, this gets me one continous avi file. I use this for my personal media player. I have done over 100 movies and only had a couple of them with audio sync problems. I now find it better to leave the avi files as individual chapters. I travel alot and sometimes dont get a chance to watch an entire movie in one sitting.
