Get any Nintendo DS of your choice; lite, fat, black, or white.
No need to mod the DS it doesn't need any modding. All you need is a flash cart solution to play backups, home brew, and emulators.
The most common flash carts for slot-1 (boots DS games) are the M3 Simply, R4, and G6.
There are also slot-2 solutions for running Gameboy Advanced backups and home brew since stand alone slot-1 solutions can only boot DS software and not GBA software. Not too sure what the most popular ones or most common ones are. I just bought an EzFlash 3-1 for my slot-2 since it was cheap.
i think you should get a ds lite over the old fat ds. the ds lite is a lot better to me if you are going to buy one and don't have one yet. the only thing i like better on the normal ds for me is that its easier to drift on mario kart =P
I'd recommend getting an R4 and an EZ Flash 3-in-1, you can flash GBA ROMs to the EZ Flash from the R4 with This, it also has a rumble dealie in it and can be used as a RAM expansion.
You can get both Here, you'll also need a MicroSD card, I'd recommend a Kingston 2GB.
