My CPU fan is broken and whenever I open my computer, the fan is extremely loud. Can this be fixed? If not, what is the fastest, strongest Intel processor that can handle many tasks? I heard the Intel Pentium D Dual Core 2 Duo 3.2 GHZ is really fast. Anything faster than this will do. Also, what is the price? Thank you! Much appreciated!!

A new $15-$20 fan would be a lot less expensive. In order to see what type of CPU your mobo can handle we would need a little more information.

1. All you NEED is a new fan or heatsink. That's cheap.
2. a Pentium D is a different CPU to a Core 2 Duo.
3. There is no Core 2 Duo available at 3.2Ghz
4. The Pentium D at 3.2Ghz is comparatively quite slow

Here are my specs:

Video Card: X1950 PRO AGP 512 MB

Motherboard: ASUS P5PE VM

RAM: 2.00 GB

Operating System: Windows XP SP2

CPU: Pentium D 3.2 GHZ

However, I want to change my cpu to a much faster cpu where I can download things, listen to music, play games or go on the internet without my computer slowing down that much. This cpu must be intel. Thank you!

The Pentium D 3.2Ghz is by no means a bad processor.
if you've got speed problems, it's not your processor.

The problem is I need a new processor. A processor that is way better than the Pentium D 3.2 GHZ. A fast powerful one! People tell me the intel pentium quad core 2 duo is the best. However,it is too expensive. So, are there any amazingly good processors?

There's no such thing as the Pentium Quad core 2 duo.
Either Pentium D (which you've got), Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad.
The fastest CPU out there right now is the Core 2 Quad QX6850, but most core 2 duo or core 2 quad processors can be overclocked to be even faster than the qx6850.

I just found out that i would have to change my entire P5P800 VM motherboard to change my cpu to a dual core or core 2 duo.

Yeah, it's an old board, so it probably won't support them.
Besides, the Pentium D 3.2Ghz really isn't that bad, just replace the fan.

How much would a motherboard that is compatible with a dual core or core 2 duo cpu cost? The cpu must be fast. In addition, will I be able to play Medal of honor airborne with my video card: X1950 PRO 512mb 3.0 shader? If not, are there ways to let me play. Also, the game is pretty laggy when I play Medal of honor airborne. Thank you very much!!! I appreciated it!!!

What settings do you run the game at? The X1950 Pro isn't a slow card (although I don't know what the AGP one is like)

Hi guys, I am thinking of building a new pc for myself. I have done it in the past but I have not been paying attention lately with the new processors.

Is there a website that will explain the difference between the new processors such as AMD, intel Dual core, quad core so I can see which one would be best for me.

Cheers

The best website is here!
I'll do a brief summary for you.

Intel celeron, AMD sempron: Low-budget single core processors.
AMD Athlon64, Intel Pentium 4HT: Low-medium budget single core processors.
Single core CPUs are so antiquated nowadays, unless your budget's really tight, they're best avoided.

Intel Pentium D: Low-medium budget dual core processors. Slower than other dual cores, but if you can get a good deal, they're not disrecommended.

AMD Athlon X2: Medium budget dual core processors, faster than the Pentium Ds, no longer the latest and greatest, but good solid performers.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Medium and above budget dual core processors, fastest range out there currently. They start out very cheap and even the high end CPUs aren't that expensive now. Incredibly fast, incredibly overclockable. HIGHLY recommended.

Intel Core 2 Quad: The best CPU range out currently, good performers, but unnecessary for the majority of users.

I am having problems playing medal of honor airborne on my system:

Video Card: X1950 PRO 512MB 3.0 Shader

Motherboard: ASUS P5PE VM

RAM: 2.00 GB

Hard Drive Free Space Available: 140 GB

CPU: Pentium D 3.2 GHZ

Operating System: Windows XP SP2

These settings already meet the game's minimum requirements and the game is still laggy when i put all the settings to low. Any suggestions?

no, all other games work fine. Call of duty 2 works fine, company of heroes works fine.

Thanks for the info - I have seen that Dell are selling a PC with AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual processor 4400 for under £400. so I might be interested in that.

Also there is a Magazine which I have seen advertised - PC Answers that shows you can build a powerful PC for under £300 so I might look at the spec of their components.

Victor14: I'm a bit confused because Company of Heroes and Call of Duty 2 aren't exactly lightweight games. However, Medla of Honor Airborne is brand new, so it may be a real system hog, I haven't tried it myself. Things to watch for are 'full dynamic lighting' that eats performance, as does 'full shadows' and Texture quality (usually indicating size, MoH-A may use more than 512MB of textures. If it does that will murder your frame rate).
If a game doesn't seem to run well at any resolution, here are things to try:

Lower Anisotropic filtering to 4x, or even go back to Trilinear
Lower Anti-Aliasing to 2x or 4x
Set Dynamic lighting to 'Object' or 'Medium' rather than Full
Set Shadows to 'medium' or 'basic'
Set Texture quality or texture resolution to medium

Try those settings. If still no luck, I'm stumped, other than to try patching the game and getting a driver update.

drahrs: Bear in mind PCs that cheap will usually have integrated graphics, so while they'll be powerful for audio-encoding and CPU-intensive activity, they'll be useless at any games and video editing. In order to play games on a PC, there's far more you have to consider than just the processor.

it's not set in your graphics control panel, it's in the game options. It'll vary for each game.
