ok right now i have a nVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400. i think thats the name of the graphics card because of the nvidia part. can anybody assist me in what kind of video card i should get or is compatible? im not expecting to get like an 8800 512mb video card, because all im planning on playing now is MOH allied assault (i know it doesn't take much graphics to play that game).

well you couldnt get an 8800 anyways, since your system is most likely agp.
Try a 7600GS. They're cheap, but pretty good.Real good bang for the buck kind of card.

how can i check for sure if my computer can be compatible with the video card ill get?
edit*= i ran a program and it says i have a AGP 64mb. and its supported with speeds 1x 2x and 4x. does that mean i can have a video card with a speed 4x/8x?

Yep, the 8x is what you want to go for. The 7600GS should work fine.

I'd advise against that. If the board doesn't support 8x it may be the wrong AGP voltage which will fry the card, and possibly also the motherboard. I'd suggest looking for something that was AGP 4x to start with.

Yeah, but doesnt it mean if a board is 4x/8x, then you can choose the 8x frequency? Thats what my mobo is...

his board isn't though, it's 1x, 2x and 4x, so it definitely can't support 8x

How do you know that sam? He hasnt givin us any detials? Do the MX400 cards only work on those kinds of boards?

i have 2 more questions,
if i get a video card and it says 4x/8x, i can still run it if my computer only goes up to 4x right?
and also, since i have a Geforce2 MX/MX400, is there a way to upgrade to a DirectX 8.0?
oh its about a soundcard thing, but i guess i should put it here instead of making a new topic, hope thats ok. how can i tell if my sound card is capable of directx 8.0 sound?

Unfortunately not usually. You'll need to find out whether your board has support for 0.8V cards or not, otherwise you risk damaging the card.
As for DX8, most cards are DX9 capable nowadays, so DX8 will be fine. As for the directsound, go to start-> Run and type
dxdiag
Then go to the audio tab and run the directsound test. If all passes, it's compatible.

ok ive passed the two tests that you told me to do. never knew you can do that lol!
but how do i check if my board is .8V compatible? do i just check the cpu and motherboard info? i have the everest program that shows what i have on my computer. would that help find out if it is compatible with .8v?

im not sure which one is the motherboard because one says chipset and im not sure which to pick so its either
IBM 229221U
or Intel Brookdale i845

Unfortunately there's nothing I can find to say one way or the other. Besides, in order to upgrade your graphics card you may very well need an uprated power supply as well.

so i mine as well just give up on upgrading my video card? i cannot find any graphic or video card better than the one i do that does not have the x8 part, like 4x/8x
