DVD-R or DVD+R with DVD-ROM bitsetting.?

I have been backing up DVD's for some years now and always used DVD-R discs as they have been the best compatibility for players. I know booktype/bitsetting improves DVD+R discs so my question is which has the best compatability results DVD-R or DVD+R with bitsetting set at DVD-ROM?

Any views?

I strictly use +R media and my burner is set to booktype to DVD-ROMs. I have never had a compatibility problem with any player.... mine or my families or friends! and I only use Taiyo Yuden disks. I used to use Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden.... but now strictly use TYs!

There is no best between two in a comparison. You are asking which is better, DVD-R or DVD+R book-typed to DVD-ROM. I believe that the book-typing may be very slightly superior. DVD-R media are compliant with DVD Forum specifications to which all DVD players must comply. However, there have been some very early players that did not understand recordable DVDs, and these players respond to the DVD-ROM book identification. Those players account for any advantage.

Early Panasonic DVD players and recorders refused to play any discs identified as DVD+, and book-setting gets around that silly political restriction.
