Nero Vision 5 (trial) not changing burner target

i downloaded the trial version of nero 8 today, with nero vision 5 so that i could finally put some avi files to disc. but for some reason, the computer wont allow me to switch the burner target to an external device. our inbuilt computer burner is busted so we have one plugged into our usb. Any advice?
