i have an external hp 940d, and i burn everything on 16x media, but it's taking 9-12 minutes to backup my movies. i tried uninstalling it, but it didn't fix anything, and got a got a pretty fast computer 3.8ghz celeron d and 2ghz ram
is it Firewire or USB2.0 ?. my 16x burners are mainly in USB2.0 enclosures but i very rarely burn above 8x in those USB burners or internal burners, there's no time saving in going above 8x as far as i know; plus USB2.0 tops out at about 8x as far as i can tell...
Neither USB 2.0 (480 Mb/s) nor FireWire (400 Mb/s) should restrict data flow to or from an external drive, even one rated at 20X because those rates are still 4-5X than the transfer to the drive optics. (USB 1.0 is far too slow at 12 Mb/s, and you would notice that immediately.)
What rate of speed is your recording software claiming? It is possible that some settings may need changing to speed up the USB transfer, but it is more likely that the media you are using record at 8X on your drive.
I mainly use clonedvd, and it says 16x, but if it were burning at that rate, it wouldn't ttake a dvd 9-10 mins to burn. I also use dvd santa sometimes, and that will only recognize it at 8x. I always use 16x media since i still can't find 18x.
I have an internal 16x drive on a slower cpu using the same version of clone, and the same dvd will finish in 2 mins.
The software is reporting 16X, but the actual recording speed is morel like 8X. Nothing unusual in that, though. Two minutes for the same DVD could only be possible if the disc were not completely filled. Either you mean 2 minutes faster or you mean the program does not fill the disc--in which case the "16X external" may be much slower than 8X.
There is no official spec for 18X media. Regular 16X discs will be modified for the faster speed, and they may have new M-codes that will disrupt legacy drives. I think anything beyond 16X is a waste of effort and not likely to improve writing quality. It's a desperate move of drive manufacturers to come up with a new feature.
it only takes about 2 minutes total for the same dvd on the slower cpu with the internal compared to 9 minutes on the faster cpu with the external with the same 16x media
That sounds as though the size of the files is under 2GB if the entire recording can be done in 2 minutes at 16X. In that case, the 9 minutes is probably 2.4X for the same files if the discs are DVD+R. A different MID code may make a difference if that 2.4X speedis a default speed for unrecognized discs. On the other hand, there may be some other settings that are causing the slower speeds.
yea i'm n ot sure what it could be. I think the movie i burned was about 2.5-3gb and it burns in less than 3 and a half mins on my internal but takes forever on the external it's tickin me off.
