I have been using the shrink/Decryptor AnyDVD combo for quite sometime with ZERO issues. For the most part I have been backing up only the main movie and other trailers etc. I have done this to reduce the amount of compression that Shink uses. In the last few months, I have been backing up the entire DVD including the menus. Can anyone tell me at what percentage you begin to notice a change in quality as to date, I cannot see a difference between almost zero compression and a good amount of compression. Just wondering.
The difference is there, it is just easier to see on a larger set.
It is not easy to put a number on where you notice changes easily. This is something that is unique and subjective. For me, I look at overall video bitrate. When bitrate gets too low, you will start seeing artifacts in the picture especially in high motion scenes. Sometimes the colors will change and you will lose fine details. It is best to try and keep overall bitrate over 4500kbps, however, initial bitrate is different for each movie.
People can tell you that 80% or whatever is their percentage, but if the initial bitrate is 3500kbps, then you are taking it down to 2800kbps and this is where you might see some problems. Basically, the higher the bitrate, the more you will be able to compress a movie and get decent quality. So long movies that are small file sizes will suffer more from compression than smaller movies with larger file sizes. There is more to it, but it would get rather confusing and as I said, this is really subjective. If you don't see the difference, then it will probably work differently for you.
