I am stumped and need some help. I will try to give as much info as possible, so bear with me, it may be a little lengthy.
I recently rebuilt my desktop computer. New motherboard, memory, power supply, graphics card. Kept the same DVD burner combo drive. Installed XP and everything was working great. Except for the burner.
Everytime I put in a DVD +R it won't recognize it. It says it is a CD. On the other hand, Nero 6 will show it as a DVD +R and burn, but Nero Express won't give me any options for DVD burning. I have to go into the start smart icon where it is recognized. I have updated the firmware, uninstalled and re-installed the drive. Nothing seems to work. I have tried everything that I can find in all the forums to no luck.
Maybe I need a new DVD burner. I just don't understand why Nero can recognize it and burn data and Video DVD's but no other programs can. Hope someone can help. Thanks!

try switching brands to something like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim and see if you have the same problem

sparksman- My understanding is that Nec's work with Native windows drivers which means which means if your OS ( windows ) is not corrupted it should be working ! I have 2 Nec's myself and have no problems with them ! I did however have a somewhat similar problem back in my CDR days with a pair of HP Cd Burners Somehow MY DMA settings got Changed ? after I enabled DMA the drives worked fine ! Perhaps your Drives are set to PIO ? ? you Might also want to Check with Binkie 7 She is super Smart and real Nice she knows alot about Drives & burners and might be able to help you more ? You could also try your drives on a friends computer or a friends drive in yours to eliminate whether it's your drive or your computer with the problem ? Also you may want to check your Jumper settings on the back of your drives ! Some computers work best with one set to master and the other to slave some work better with the Jumper set to cable select ( CS) on one or both drives ! Wish I could be more help Good luck sparksman !!! & happy Troubleshooting Ciao!

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately I have already tried everything that has been mentioned. I have come to the conclusion that it is a OS problem. I am still able to burn DVD's but it takes two steps now instead of one. I guess it is not really a big deal, but I just like things to run they way they were intended to. Thanks again!
