Ok, I'm using a BenQ 1655 burner under Windows XP with Nero 6.
Lately, I burn a DVD, either in movie mode or as an ISO file backup, then when I reinsert the thing to read it, it cannot read the disc.
If I then reboot the system, the thing read fine!
What is going on? Sounds like some sort of system munge.

I have the same burner are you have and never ever had your problem as you're describing. Maybe your computer needs cleaning out so it can work better and be more efficient! Use CCleaner, defrag, and reboot.... see if this helps!

Well, I use two excellent registry cleaners already on a daily basis, so I don't think that's the problem.
Also, as I mentioned, re-booting the systems gets the burner to read the discs, even without running a registry cleaner. I have already tried replacing the driver software by deleting the drive, then re-installing with no luck.

I use 3 different registry cleaners and also I use a boot up defrager! And I use a program called Evidence Eliminator that cleans out all unnecessary files and foot prints that will keep the computer and windows clean.... not just the registry!
All I can say is that I have the BenQ 1655 and it never forgot how to read a disk or anything...... could it be the settings in your programs that you use to read the disk? are you using RealPlayer or Windows Media Player or is it Windows not showing the disk in Explorer after you burn to disk? that's why the reboot would work..... sets the settings back to default.

That's probably your problem, there is no such thing as an excellant registry cleaner nor is there a reason to ever use one, much less 2 daily.

You must be unaware of the Windows OS. MS DOS 6.2 had problems and it's been a downhill trip from there. So you prefer a corrupted registry when you burn your DVD's?
IHoe has been defending the BenQ burner. I have no complaints w/ that burner. I'm sure that instead, something is munged in the Windows installation that is affecting the burner's performance and was hoping that someone might suggest a place to look. My last recourse is to completely re-install the entire OS, but it's not my favorite way of spending time.
It was a sad day when OS/2 tanked.

I would be interested to know what reg cleaners actually fix a corrupted registry. Removing various registry fragments isn't fixing, nor are these fragments 'problems' as these cleaners like to call them. Unfortunately many times these cleaners can and do flag needed items for deletion.
Go into Device Manager, find your optical, right click choose 'Uninstall' and reboot.

First of all, thanks for your comments. My impression of registry cleaners is that by removing invalid pointers, they can speed system response, the loading of programs, etc. The Microsoft registry system is by no means as capable and functional as that found in versions of UNIX, etc. I am not a happy camper with Windows, but that is what we have to work with.

Yes, this is one of the first things I tried, but unfortunately with no luck. It's been about a year since I first installed Windows XP, and it may just be that the system is munged enough now to make it necessary for a complete re-install. My gut-level feeling is that it ain't Nero's fault, it ain't BenQ's fault, it's got to be the OS.
