I have a special situation where I dont need to connect a 44 pin device to a 40 pin connector on the motherboard. Instead, I need to connect a 40 pin device to 44 pin connector on the motherboard. i am not sure if I can usethis cable here http://cgi.ebay.com/12-Rounded-40-Pin-to...VQQcmdZViewItem . I am worried about the power pins at the 44 pin side. Could someone tell me if this would be alright to use?

If that cable is what's needed, should work just fine.

moved to correct forum as not a windows problem. that cable won't work as you need power to the 40 pin device. go with an external usb ide drive enclosure to solve your problem. what are you trying to attach to the laptop motherboard?

Actually I'm building an ITX computer. I will be using the smallest motherboard which is 10cm by 7.4cm. It has 1 44 pin connector and 1 sata connector. The HD will connect to the sata. I have a 40pin ide dvdrw laptop drive. I am going to use one of the power pins that normally goes to floppy drive to power the dvd, as thats that power connector it has.

you need 12 volts for the motors & 5 volts for the circuit board.

@21Q
This is a lot better: http://www.directron.com/nbadapter.html
I have used this before on hard drives. I don't think either will work on opticals just as ddp has pointed out. There are only 2 wires for either setup; 1 ground and 1 hot.
