the dell cpu is probably a mobile chip or a northwood dye cpu. your desktop being a 2.5ghz sounds like a prescott dye cpu which the dell board is unlikely able to run as in not post. this is from the user guide of your laptop.

Considering that the dell has a mobile processor, it probably can't. Changing the CPU of laptops is a very tricky process, sometimes the CPUs are soldered on!

abuzar, it might or might not have a mobile cpu on it. dealt very much that the cpu is soldered on a laptop motherboard.

I read somewhere that they do. Oh well, the point is the chances are slim.

well it is a removeable CPU just thought id ask thanks. It is my only stable comp as it is now so i won't risk it LOL. And something else i thought about i have a new AMD 2x socket AM2 64 bit (of course) and was wondering if i need a new version of win xp pro sp2, like something to utilize the dual core or will my version do it anyway. I have currently installed win xp pro SP2 V-5.1.2600 . So again thanx for anything anybody can think of

So do you think it would create more heat if i put it in and it worked ? remember its a laptop too and the fan's are quite small they keep this one the 2.0 Ghz at a nice 30 to 37 degree's , but my fan's are running at full speed all the time keeping them on low keeps it at about 45 give or take a degree

you can try it but doubt it will work as the laptop bios probably won't recognize a prescott cpu & won't post.
