Ok, so, like every idiot who has an external hard drive, I had EVERYTHING on it. All my documents, movies, music, pictures, stuff for work (sensitive stuff), and alot of irreplacable stuff too. So, of course, it died. The power cable works, and the usb cable works, but for some reason the external hard drive itself isn't getting any power or registering on my pc. Of course, one's first instinct would be to take it into a data rocvery place, but due to the nature of my work, and the sensitivity of some of the stuff on it, I can't. It's a 250GB external hard drive in a casing. My question is, is there any way I can take it out of the casing and hook it up, maybe to a desktop (I use a laptop) and recover the data on it? And if not, IS THERE ANYTHING THAT CAN BE DONE?!?

Any help would be much appreciated as it would save not only my career, but my piece of mind, as there's alot of personal stuff on it that can't be replaced also.

You can try taking it out of the casing and putting it in your PC (no guarantees that'll be any different though). The best thing you can do to get it working is to change the logic board for one that's identical to it. You may be able to get the drive manufacturer to send you a replacement board.

What I would do:

Take the enclosure apart. Disconnect the internal cables and take out the hard drive. Pin the harddrive as a slave drive and install it as an internal slave drive.

If it still doesnt work, it maybe toast or you installed it wrong.

Hope I was helpful

If you do manage to get your PC to recognize it, but get stupid problems like I did such as partitions going missing, I really really really recommend a program called Active@ Undelete. It recovered all my data from my hard drive when it's partition went missing..
