Hard Drive Enclosure 3.5 - 5.25 Set up

Hello,
I recently bought a hard drive enclosure so I can access my hard drive from my 5 year old pc that sh** the bed. I followed what little directions came with the hardware. The box turns on fine, sometimes freezes up my mouse and keyboard on my new pc. My new and old pc have the exact same OS system, WinXP Pro. The new pc recognizes the new hardware, but I can't read the drive. I am hoping the drive is still good. Is it possible I have the old hard drive hooked up wrong in the enclosure?
How can I tell?

It's generally quite difficult to mess up the install of an external hard drive. If the cables aren't right, they won't fit. Given the nature of the problem, I think the hard drive was the faulty component in the old PC. Hard drives are the components with the shortest potential lifespan of any components in a PC. A well built CPU, Motherboard and Power supply will last 20 years, this is rarely the case with hard disks.

I have one more question though. To hook the old hard drive to the enclosure there are three things to hook up. The IDE cable, which I just happen to know the name of it, HAHA, and two more. I couldn't hook up the small piece in the middle because it wouldn't stay put. There were two rows of pins and one row had a small white pin cover, covering two of the pins. So, I tried to hook up that piece on the other row where no pins were covered, but it kept falling out.
I appologize for not knowing the exact names of those two other components.

In a nutshell, if you plug it into your PC and it causes issues, keyboard/mouse freezing, poor performance, crashes etc. there's usually a fault with the hardware. Assuming no fault with the enclosure, it's going to be the hard disk. The solution? Back it up!
Ah, the bit in the middle is the jumper. On the hard disk itself there'll be a label, which should show you what position does what. Try setting it to the function 'MASTER'.

From what I can see on the hard drive instructions, it has two rows of 5 pins. The jumper can cover any two pins. My enclosure will only cover 4 pins, so I have to move the jumper to the right and cover the last fifth pin on both rows. Or am I to leave the jumper off completely, which would make it the master?
But when I try and connect the enclosure to it the piece I stick on the hard drive pins wont stay put. It keeps falling out.

Yes, it shows different pictures of what it should look like for Master, Slave etc. One of which I described to you. But either way the two don't stay put when I plug them together.
Any suggestions?

The jumper should be rock solid in there, they're usually difficult to remove. Perhaps try and find an alternative way of bridging the connection?
What does the drive say it will do if there is no jumper used?

The jumper is fine, its not loose. Without any jumper it would be the master. The part that is loose is the part I plug into it next to the jumper. Or am I not suppose to plug anything in there?

Look at the bottom hard drive in this picture. All you need to attach is the IDE cable and the power cable, neither of which should be loose (especially not the power cable)

I did that already. But there was a third component on the enclosure, and I guess I don't need to use that.

Well I removed the jumper and plugged it in the enclosure as the master.
My new pc recognized the enclosure as "F" drive. When I right clicked to "open", I saw nothing. :( blahh ... I guess either the drive is blank or I can't view it as master. Maybe I will try it as slave by moving the jumper.

Go to disk management (type diskmgmt.msc in a Start->Run Box) and then find your external in the list. Does it recognise it properly?
Also check in the device manager.

I did the diskmgmt.msc and yes, it is recognized properly. It says it is a healthy drive. It also says nothing under "file system", and free space is the same size as the size hard drive. :( I guess that means its completely empty huh? It must have been wiped clean when I had the "half power outage" when the pc died. Sigh .. I was so hoping to save some of the stuff on there. I did have a backup but it didn't have everything.
So do you agree its wiped clean? I guess I was hoping for some miracle. HAHA ...
