I was bored so I decided to apply the new firmware which I didn't really need since 2.16 was working totally fine for me. I applied it using the DOS method and everything went fine. Previously using the Windows updater, I would get error messages, but the updates would seem fine.

Well, I can still burn my Princo DVD-Rs fine at 4x with Nero 6. And I can still seem to read all of the DVD-Rs fine too.

But I am seeing the CD-R read problem others have reported. I contacted Optorite support and they responded back rather quickly that they were aware of the problem and actually gave me a work-around that worked. You can put a commercially pressed CD (non CD-R) into the drive and let it read it. Then put your CD-R back in and it should read fine. Everything should be okay again until you burn another DVD. Then the problem seems to re-occur.

Since I work in the software quality assurance field, I understand that there is always a chance that something will be wrong with new releases. So I don't hold it against a company when problems occasionally come up. My true test is how quickly they respond and get me a work-around or a fix, and I am very pleased to say they did this. I'll keep the new firmware installed since I have another drive I mainly use for reading CDs and DVDs and wait to see if it's really fixed in the next firmware release.
