I have a pc that is about two years old that I still use quite frequently but the other day I noticed that it was only running at half the speed the processor should be running at. I dual boot this machine so I'm going to explain what I see in windows. In the system properties tab I'm showing 1.01GHz on a 2.01GHz machine. So I decided to unplug everything and reset CMOS and this temporarily corrected my problem (6-7 reboots) Today when I powered the machine on I noticed the problem is back. Does anyone know what could be causing this? If so, please help. (I'm already looking at new motherboards and processors just because I've maxed that particular pc out and I have a new SLI card I'm looking to dub up on the new motherboard but I would still like to find a fix for this) any help is always greatly appreciated.

Its ok for them to do that! Thats a way for the processor to use less power when you're searching the net, or viewing videos etc. When you switch into a intesive CPU application or game, the processor will revert to its normal setting. My C2D in my laptop right now is running at 967MHz, as opposed to its 2.16Ghz, which is fine.

I might not have been as concerned if it had been one of my notebooks but it is my desktop. When it does go down to 1.01 it stays that way too. I play a lot of GRAW2 and F.E.A.R. and of course Madden as well and even when in game mode it will stay down at 1.01GHz. So that is why I'm concerned. Anyways, I reset the CMOS again and I have only been booting windows for the past couple days and it has been fine. So.. I'm wondering if maybe something about booting linux confuses BIOS (which it shouldn't I know) but the problem only seems to arise when and after I have booted over to linux and back to windows. Something is tampering with the multipliers and I just don't get it. Anyways I'm one day away from having enough time to DBAN and refurbish back to factory settings and see if the problem still exist. I appreciate the feedback though.. just figured I would share that lil tidbit w/ you.

Just a suggestion but your cmos battery could be getting weak causing weird things to happen. I had a computer do this exact same thing and I couldn't figure out what was going on till the cmos battery up and died. BTW what's the specs on the PC?

Remember no matter how much you know someone else knows more than you do!
