don't use nero 8 to many problems stick with nero 7.8.5.0 or above
jwerm20 more than likely you're very slow burn speed is caused by you're drives being in PIO mode where as they need to be in DMA mode you can fix that in device manager by uninstalling the IDE controllers then and let windows reinstall them or use this guide.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038
a clean reinstall of nero may help also

uninstall the controllers not drives...
controllers manage the PIO / DMA settings
uninstalling drives and rebooting reloads the drivers

@Rotary..... you're absolutely right about the controllers..... and I'm sure ZoSoIV didn't mean drivers because if you check out his link will show that the Alkohol guide resets the controllers! So, ZoSoIV just had a slip of the tongue! LOL but he got the link right!

that guide does show drives being uninstalled too, as a desperation move/attempt, hmmm? maybe drivers could get currupt but usually if the drivers are not there or bad the cd/dvd drives dont actually show up in my computer...
also to note here that the motherboard in the pc needs chipset/IDE drivers loaded and maybe a ASPI layer, nero does load its own, but i as a rule of thumb, i personally load adaptecs ASPI v4.7 everytime (once a year) i reload my pc to keep speed a constant.

@jwerm20..... My Nero history file is in My Documents\Nero. If it's not there or you don't see it anywhere then do what 56delray mentioned.... do a search for Nerohistory.txt on your computer looking in all your files and folders.

First it took 6 min to burn the DVD.
So you must be talking about encoding.
For that you need a fast CPU, more RAM and defrag the hard drive.
Run a search on "encoding speed".
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/2/314831
Some other points to mention.
You should update Nero to 7.5.9.0 or 7.10.1.0
http://www.filehippo.com/download_nero_7_premium/tech/?1901
http://www.filehippo.com/download_nero_7_premium/?2893
There is a 1.07 firmware update for your writer.
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2157
You need more RAM, until then watch what is running while burning.
The media code is TYG02, but that is 8x media.
The rule is to burn at half the rated speed of the media.
CDRALW2K is Roxio's driver and it will cause problems if you install Nero InCD.
Some say should just remove it, so here the tool to remove it.
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml
edit
What software are using to encode the DVD.

ok we need to stand back abit as its getting confusing...
1, What is the actual project your doing? IE: just burning dvd video to dvdR? (should take a few minutes)
or are you encoding/converting a video file EG: .AVI .MPEG .MKV to dvd files ready to burn (which is taking 6 hours)?
2, Recorder: <_NEC DVD_RW ND-3550A> Version: 1.05 - HA 1 TA 0 - 7.5.1.1
Adapter driver: <IDE> HA 1
Drive buffer : 2048kB
Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ? <--- you useing a USB DVDRW drive? not usre on this part CREAKY is the man here
=== Scsi-Device-Map ===
DiskPeripheral : Maxtor 94610U6 atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On
CdRomPeripheral : _NEC DVD_RW ND-3550A atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: On
CdRomPeripheral : LG CD-ROM CRD-8483B atapi Port 1 ID 1 DMA: Off <--- you still have DMA/PIO problems
do you have an ASPI layer installed? if not get one here
http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/speed/softw.../aspi32_exe.htm
for your drives
3, 56delray well spotted, the ROXIO app installed get rid and use his link after uninstall to get rid of registry !!!
Existing drivers:
File 'Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS': Ver=8.0.0.212 , size=2560 bytes, created 8/16/2006 3:00:00 AM
get rid of roxio AND reg clean up before doing the above 1, 2, problems
---------------------------------------------------
also how much space do you have left on your hard drive?
have you de-fragmented your hard drive lately?
Nothing here to see, move along folks.

What file type are you downloading (.avi)?

Nero has it's own ASPI layer.
Originally posted by Adaptec: ASPI layer version 4.60 (1021), for Windows 9x and Windows NT only. This includes updates to the following files: WINASPI.DLL, WNASPI32.DLL, APIX.VXD, ASPIENUM.VXD, ASPI32.SYS, and WOWPOST.EXE. Simply execute ASPI32.EXE to install/upgrade the ASPI drivers.
Since the NEC DMA is on this should be OK.
What transfer mode is listed?

time span sounds about right now...
so it was probably nero taking ages...
although if it were me i would use ConvertXtoDVD to make the dvd/burn.
-----------------------------
also to note here! windows ME would be FAT32 file system, and an upgrade may of kept FAT32? windows xp is better on NTFS. fat32 doesnt like files over 1gig. where ntfs can.

How to convert a FAT volume or a FAT32 volume to NTFS
Note Although the chance of corruption or data loss during the conversion is minimal, we recommend that you perform a backup of the data on the volume that you want to convert before you start the conversion.
To convert an existing FAT or FAT32 volume to NTFS, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
2. At the command prompt, type the following, where drive letter is the drive that you want to convert:
convert drive letter: /fs:ntfs
For example, type the following command to convert drive E to NTFS:
convert e: /fs:ntfs
Note If the operating system is on the drive that you are converting, you will be prompted to schedule the task when you restart the computer because the conversion cannot be completed while the operating system is running. When you are prompted, click YES.
3. When you receive the following message at the command prompt, type the volume label of the drive that you are converting, and then press ENTER:
The type of the file system is FAT.
Enter the current volume label for drive drive letter
4. When the conversion to NTFS is complete, you receive the following message at the command prompt:
Conversion complete
5. Quit the command prompt.
