I'm trying to burn a movie I ripped with DVD Shrink using Nero. I've burned plenty of movies on my Memorex 16x DVD-R discs with this burner before, but it won't work anymore. I'm not doing anything differently and I have the latest firmware. However, when I tried to burn it, it got to 1% then got a focus or tracking error. I tried it again, but got a Power Calibration Error. I tried with Kodak discs, same thing. Here is the log of my latest failed attempt:

The drive could be failing or you have a power supply problem. With your computer off and unplugged, open up the case and check the cables. Maybe even unplug the power cable and plug a different power cable in, if you have one that's not plugged into anything. Make sure the data cable is firmly connected to the drive. Now would also be a good time to vacuum out dust, computers constantly suck in air and collect dust. Gently vacuum the front of the drive with a bristle brush. If it's been awhile since you last checked your hard drive for errors, do so now.

Unfortunately it's not uncommon for optical drives to go bad. I have a fairly new NEC 3520aw DVD/RW DL that's acting funny after just 3 years. It can't seem to read DVD's very well, spins up to high speed to read everything and then takes an hour to copy something off. I replaced it last year with a Samsung S182M that also reads/writes DVD-RAM and adds LightScribe. All for $40 for a bare drive, it's been a great drive with no problems. The bottom line is that your Sony may be going bad. If you can't get it to work right, don't spend too much time trying to fix it. Just buy a new drive that will work better, offer more features, and won't cost a lot of money.
