I have a general question I need help with. My friend has a VPR Matrix 180R and we can't get the built in motherboard sound card to work. My question is, If she got a Portable USB speaker will it work? I think it would since it is not being plugged into the sound card. Does anyone know about this?

Your sound card isnt working at all or just for that program your talking about?
In my opinon USB speakers are better then built in speakers. The built in speakers are very small and no base can really be heard much. With my external speakers I can hear every muh better and the sound is much louder too.
If your sound card is working but just not for the program your using then try looking at your volume properties option. See if you have any optinons muted like , synth, mic, line in, etc. If the line in is muted then that is most likely the problem.
If your sound card isnt working at all then there is one of two problems either the sound card is just old and is no good or you just need to update your drivers.
You can find anything with google. Or you can go to the website of your computer. If its sony or dell or what, they should have all updated audio drivers for your computer.

The computer is a VPR Matrix, Model 180R. Windows XP was re-installed to give the system a fresh start and after windows was re-installed the sound card has not worked. We looked up the VPR Matrix website and they have no audio drivers for this model. I have researched this problem and it seems like a lot of people have this problem with this PC after re-installing windows. I've looked this up on numerous forums but no one has provided a clear and definite fix.

I've read somewhere that if we un-installed all audio components under device manager and then reboot, that the problem would fix itself. all that happens when we do that is that the PC recognizes the sound card as new hardware and installs it automatically.

Any other suggestions?
